Context: The Associate Communications Specialist works with Communications staff as well as staff in other departments on editing and writing national Sierra Club communications to the highest standard of editorial excellence and effectiveness.

Scope:  Works with the Deputy Communications Director, Communications Specialist, and Content Producers to ensure deployment of timely, accurate, and engaging content that meets objectives appropriate for each type of material. Ensures that information is current and reflects Sierra Club priorities and strategic objectives.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Researches, drafts, and/or edits communication materials for senior Sierra Club executives (e.g. executive director, chief of staff, and directors), including blog posts, magazine columns, speeches, and opinion pieces as assigned by Communications Specialist or Deputy Communications Director.
  • Oversees message content of materials produced by the Sierra Club, including opinion pieces and high-level blogs, in coordination with the Communications Specialist.
  • Coaches and mentors staff across departments to improve quality of writing: encourage genuine storytelling and remind of need to engage emotions as well as intellect. Teaches tools of basic reporting and research, encourages clear thinking, and advises on ways to assure accuracy, good grammar, and syntax.
  • Reviews and edits public-facing communications to ensure highest editorial standards in those materials and to help raise the standard for all materials.
  • Updates the Sierra Club Editorial Style Guide with Communications Specialist to promote highest standards and consistency in Sierra Club communications.
  • Collaborates with Digital on updating editorial calendar for Sierra Club content; testing strategies; reviewing and reporting on relevant communications metrics for newsletters and blog posts.
  • Develops and implements trainings for Communications staff and others on how to write stories that people want to read and how to message effectively.
  • Works with Program staff to develop effective written communications materials for campaigns and issues in collaboration with Press Secretaries.
  • Reviews, revises, writes, and edits public-facing campaign materials, including high-traffic sierraclub.org website pages and national email newsletters.
  • Stays current on all Club messaging and Club issues in general.
  • Participates in projects and other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 2-3 years of experience in the communications industry. Prior work experience in online or print publishing environments.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise and skill using CMS platforms and basic familiarity with HTML code.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects subject to shifting constraints and priorities and to achieve and track both quantitative and qualitative results.
  • Ability to interact effectively with volunteers and staff.
  • Demonstrated organizational, statistical, and analytical skills.
