Plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of a team of organizing staff and volunteers in carrying out climate campaigns and programs in assigned targets, states and/or regions.  Participates in the development of innovative strategies and tactics and helps in setting campaign priorities and plans.  Working in conjunction with an experienced Organizing Manager, coaches and mentors organizing staff.  Provides primary leadership in developing and implementing campaign that builds grassroots power, by increasing the number of people involved, leaders developed, and engagement of people with influence in developing and implementing organizing campaigns .

The lead organizer is responsible for the coordination of organizing campaign work at the local, state, and/or national level.  Working with a team of organizers, participates in the strategies and helps to carry out, organizational and issue visibility in regional, national media and in the local community.  Helps provide leadership to a team of organizers in activities to win on priority campaigns.  Works in close cooperation with volunteer leaders, Organizing Managers, chapter staff, and/or national campaign staff on national, state and local conservation staff on Climate campaigns.  Provides advice, direction, support and guidance to a team of organizers.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provides daily guidance and support on organizing activities of one or more major campaign or program.  Works with chapter, regional and national conservation volunteers and staff to develop organizing plan to achieve conservation campaign or program goals, oversees implementation of the plan, and oversees program budget/expenses.  Evaluates changing conditions and modifies plans accordingly. Evaluates the success of the campaign or program goals.  Works with staff to identify opportunities to advance the Sierra Club’s diversity initiatives and incorporate into organizing plans.
  • Plans and coordinates strategy and activities to obtain media coverage in regional, state and national media outlets.  Participates in the development of media campaigns; may represent the Sierra Club in the media; promotes volunteer media exposure.
  • Works with organizing team to set field metrics and tracks delivery on those metrics to ensure grassroots campaign activities are building the long term grassroots power of the Club.
  • Guides and coaches organizing team members to develop strategic organizing plan.  Provides support advice, coaching and mentoring to a team of grassroots organizers in order to ensure the organizers are trained in the craft of organizing and that the organizers are effectively delivering on grassroots campaigns which win real conservation victories and builds the grassroots power of the Club.
  • Lobbies public officials on behalf of the Club on local, state and national conservation priorities.
  • Coordinates political organizing in electoral campaigns; serves as liaison between Sierra Club and leadership of political parties and other political entities.
  • Represents Sierra Club in local, state and national coalitions and to the general public.
  • In cooperation with fundraising staff, assists in the development of funding proposals and participates in grant making and solicitation efforts.
  • Helps train and motivate organizing staff and volunteers.  Participates in volunteer meetings, trainings and events as needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
3-5 years’ experience as a field organizer and/or leading community organizing campaigns, plus relevant BA/BS degree or commensurate education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Prior experience and/or demonstrated ability in developing, training and coaching employees.
  • Working knowledge of budget management restricted and grant funding.
  • In depth knowledge of the craft of grassroots organizing and the political system.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in using the media; excellent oral, written and social media communication skills.
  • Prior experience in the development of grant proposals and individual donor relationships.
  • Substantial experience in the strategic planning and direction of campaigns and programs.
  • Demonstrated effective oversight in implementing campaign plans.
  • Extensive travel required. Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record and proof of auto insurance required.
