The National Center for Science Education (NCSE) seeks a full-time Director of Development.

The Director of Development will be a member of NCSE's leadership team, responsible for ensuring that donors feel connected to NCSE and appreciated for their role in achieving its mission. The Director of Development will report directly to the Executive Director and will work closely with the Director of Communications to ensure that the importance of NCSE's mission and the effectiveness of its programs are clearly and consistently conveyed across all communications platforms. The Director will work to build a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Key Responsibilities

  • Individual and Major Donors
    • Assess NCSE’s individual donor base; develop and implement a plan to increase donor engagement and retention, revive lapsed donors, and attract new donors.
    • Identify donors with potential for major gifts; develop and implement major donor engagement plan
  • Institutional Donors
    • Research and identify foundation and government funding opportunities
    • Coordinate the preparation of funding proposals for government and foundation grants, and oversee compliance with reporting requirements
  • Board and Staff Philanthropy Engagement
    • Mentor Board and staff in effective development and philanthropy approaches; build organizational appreciation for the importance of a culture of philanthropy; meet regularly with Board and staff to develop and implement individual outreach plans, provide training as needed
    • Manage and document donor contacts for the Executive Director, Board, and staff members
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications

  • Three to five years professional experience in fundraising is required.
  • Exceptional communication skills and proven ability to articulate an organization’s unique mission effectively.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating donor relationships and developing and implementing fundraising strategies.
  • Experience in foundation research, and in managing grant submission and reporting processes.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in the education, science, or environmental sectors preferred.
  • On-line or social media-based fundraising experience a plus.
  • Experience, or demonstrated ability to learn: Salesforce, Constant Contact or similar, Microsoft Office.
  • Education: BA/BS required
