The Oakland Director of Design will be an integral member of a tight-knit team focused on accelerating the impact Teach For America educators in the San Jose area. This person will develop arcs of learning for first and second year corps members, and will lead our team to execute the necessary learning experiences for corps members to work toward our vision. They’ll collaborate closely with members of Team Oakland, especially our Coaches. The Director, Design will report to the Managing Director of Program. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Designing and Facilitating Teacher Learning Experiences (40%)

  • Design the arcs of learning experiences for corps members for onboarding through the end of their second year, aligned to our regional and team vision; for example, support transitioning from institute to their fall placement or
  • Designs discrete learning experiences for corps members, for example
  • To inform design, gathers input by engaging corps members, alumni, school partners, external experts and community partners
  • Facilitates learning experiences for teachers

 Project Management of Teacher Learning Experiences (40%)

  • Set vision for and plans for medium and large scale teacher learning experiences
  • Project manages large-scale teacher learning experiences,
  • Lateral management of other team members, including but not limited to planning and facilitating team meetings and 1:1 check ins, preparing team members for facilitation, progress monitoring, providing input and feedback
  • Communicates with team members, corps members, and external partners

  Supports regional, community or national initiatives (15%)

  • Our designer will support our team by participating in the selection of new corps members and confirmation of accepted corps members.
  • Especially after their first year on the team, our designer may have opportunities to lead regional design projects for staff and/or corps members.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred.
Skills/Experience: 

 Prior Experience

  • Minimum three years of highly effective teaching experience.
  • Understanding of and experience using effective adult learning theory to work with adults required
  • Experience coaching teachers and / or leading teacher development required
  • Teaching experience in Oakland preferred, but not required.
  • Experience managing projects preferred, but not required

Work Demands

  • Must be able to travel regularly around Oakland occasionally to the other Bay Area offices (Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Richmond).
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary; overnight travel is minimal.
  • Ideally able to start to by mid-June
