Job Title: Deputy National Organizing Director

Location: Contiguous 48 (near a major city preferred)

Context:  Works to ensure the Sierra Club Organizing Department builds grassroots power to be successful in advancing conservation and movement building outcomes. The three broad components of this position include Movement Building, National organizing liaison and coordination with identified campaigns, programs and initiatives and special projects as assigned.  Working in coordination with the Senior Organizing Team, responsible for overseeing, organizing, and movement building support and training for Sierra Club organizing and scaling activities on local, regional, and national issues as well as providing support to Organizing Department staff and volunteers.   

Scope:  Assists volunteers and organizing staff with training and developing organizing guidance and practices for Movement Building and Justice Principles, Transformational Organizing and Distributed Organizing. Works with Digital Strategies Department to ensure integration between our on-line and on-the-ground organizing work, Coordinates closely with the Data Director and Data team to assess data needs, including active use of our activists database (CORE).  Implement training on Movement Building Metrics.  Provides leadership and support for Organizing Department staff and volunteers in ensuring excellence in our organizing, movement building, justice and equity work.

Job Activities:

  1. ORGANIZING AND MOVEMENT BUILDING – Provides leadership and direction in the development and implementation of the Sierra Club’s movement building and organizing work.  Leadership would include continuing to refine our organizing model to include transformational organizing that is centered in our values of equity and justice, creation of a training program for our organizing staff, and coaching and support of all organizing staff.  Analyzes environmental issues and grassroots and movement building best practices on region or national level.
  2. POWER BUILDING METRICS AND MOVEMENT BUILDING INDICATORS  – Works with organizing team to monitor and track our power building metrics and establish new Organizing Department movement building indicators. 
  3. SPECIAL PROJECTS – Take on special projects identified by the National Organizing Director, the Senior Organizing Team, Program Director and/or the National Program Director.   These special projects could range from short-term time and charge specific projects to more extended special projects. Working in conjunction with the National Organizing Director, this position will be on point for Organizing Department annual planning and reporting.
  4. STAFF MANAGEMENT - Hires, evaluates, coaches, trains and manages 1-3 national Organizing staff.
  5. RELATIONSHIP BUILDING WITH STRATEGIC PARTNERS - Promotes and participates in collaborations with other national organizations.
  6. TRAINING –This position would work with the Trainings Director to design and deliver training programs needed by the Organizing g Department.
  7. ORGANIZING CAMPAIGNS - Coordinates, motivates, trains, and informs organizing staff and volunteer leaders and helps them organize effective grassroots campaigns on priority issues.  Collaborates with and assists national campaign and program staff
  8. DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVE - Acts as a liaison between the Organizing Department and national volunteer leaders, national campaigns, and programs and with national coalition partners.
  9. MISCELLANEOUS - Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.

 

Knowledge and Skill:

  • 5-7 years supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to develop, train and support employees, especially field organizers.
  • Strong visionary leadership skills, able to clearly communicate broad vision, goals, and steps to achieving those goal across department orally and in writing.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in the environmental movement or social justice advocacy including organizing campaigns, working with volunteers, creating public demand for a policy, movement building, holding the decision makers accountable, and taking delivery on campaign goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience in advancing equity, inclusion and justice.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in office management, budget planning and management.
  • Ability to interact effectively with public, staff, volunteers and government officials.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team, to provide guidance and leadership to colleagues, excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
