Group Leader Position Descriptionfull-time AmeriCorps members who serve in Title I elementary schools throughout Oakland. 

The Group Leader on Special Assignment supports the program through daily classroom support, program logistics, student assessment, and coordination with SSL staff and school partners. This includes being a daily presence in classrooms to support positive student behavior, overseeing school and parent communication and effective after school program. Group Leaders on Special Assignment provide one-on-one and small group intervention support during the school day and facilitate an after-school literacy intervention program of up to 20 students during a typical work day of 9:00-6:00 PM.

Throughout the service term GLs meet weekly with SSL staff for continued training, coaching, and mentoring.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Coordinate with the Program Manager and Group Leader team to ensure the successful implementation of SSL after school program.
  • Oversee student recruitment and enrollment process
  • Facilitate collaboration between Group Leaders and school day teachers
  • Participate/Lead site visits with Board and others as needed
  • Provide behavior and classroom management support during the after school programs daily and coverage for Group Leaders when needed.
  • Assist in orienting late recruits to the new school site and position responsibilities.
  • Support implementation of program initiatives (i.e. online learning tools)
  • Ensure the completion of data collection, data entry and reporting procedures
  • Conduct assessments support timely and accurate completion of student testing process.
  • Participate in regular weekly staff training, development, supervision, and team meetings.
  • Participate in National Days of Service and other AmeriCorps activities.

 

Educational Background: 
High School diploma or equivalent
a minimum of 48 college units
Skills/Experience: 
  • Interest in working with children (experience in literacy tutoring desirable but not required)
  • An energetic and positive attitude
  • Communication skills necessary to work with children, school staff, and volunteers
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a full workload
  • Flexibility and poise when dealing with stressful situations
  • Experience working with diverse communities or demonstrated commitment to community service
  • Bilingual desirable but not required
  • Position Duration: January 2, 2018 to June 30, 2018. Members must serve a full time commitment (minimum 43 hours per week) until the end of June.
Compensation/Benefits: 

All members receive a monthly living allowance of approximately $1800 before taxes and deductions. In addition, members may be eligible for health coverage and loan forbearance while in service. Members who complete a full term of service will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for $3,000, which can be used to pay back loans or for future educational expenses.

Additional Information: 

Eligibility Requirements: All members must pass criminal history check, including FBI, DOJ, and NSOPW searches, as well as supply proof of tuberculosis clearance, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a minimum of 48 college credits. In addition, applicants must be able to supply a proof of citizenship or legal resident alien status.

Programs: 

Super Stars Literacy is an early literacy intervention program that provides in-school and after-school services to K-2nd grade students whose low literacy skills place them at high risk of later academic failure.  The program has three components:

Extended Learning Program: Students attend the extended learning program daily and receive literacy instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency, as well as social emotional support in empathy, impulse control, and conflict negotiation. The extended learning program is led by AmeriCorps Members (known as “Group Leaders”) who receive 250 hours per year of intensive training in classroom management and instruction.

In-School Intervention: Group Leaders spend up to three hours per day in the students’ regular school-day classrooms, collaborating with teachers to provide one-on-one or small group reading support.

Family Engagement: SSL provides opportunities for caregivers to learn more about their child’s literacy and social emotional development via regular outreach, family reading nights, and other special events.

SSL AmeriCorps members, known as Group Leaders (GLs), are full-time AmeriCorps members who serve in Title I elementary schools throughout the East Bay Area. GLs provide one-on-one and small group intervention support  during the school day and lead an after-school literacy intervention program of no more than  16 students.

Super Stars Literacy Group Leaders serve in a cohort of 30 members all of whom  are interested in education, committed to making a lasting impact in their communities, and are excited about working with elementary age students. Prior to starting in the classroom, members participate in an extensive,  two-week orientation, and throughout the 11 month service term meet weekly with SSL staff for continued training, coaching, and mentoring.
