Managing Director, Content Strategy and Activation (NYC)

As the Managing Director of Content Strategy and Activation you will be instrumental in developing the content strategy that spans all digital channels and communications at Teach For America. This new role has been created because actionable, timely, and valuable content is central to how Teach For America achieves its powerful mission to transform society through educational reform. Under the direction of the Senior Managing Director of Content Strategy you will be empowered to mentor and manage a team of mission-driven creatives who span copy, user experience, and content strategy. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be at the heart of a strategic shift in how a large, complex not-for-profit communicates in digital channels, and you will help to build this new content strategy function in partnership with your manager.

You will report to the Senior Managing Director of Content Strategy and serve as a key deputy in the leadership team of Teach For America’s digital marketing organization.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead the content strategy team, including copywriters, user experience designers, and support team members
  • Ensure all content that is published is properly edited, quality controlled, and upholds Teach For America’s strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Catalog, document, and maintain a site content inventory of all Teach For America web, social, and email activities
  • Conduct content audits to assess and evaluate content quality
  • Conduct competitive analyses of content
  • Create taxonomy/nomenclature lists and definitions
  • Develop an overall content strategy/vision for all platforms
  • Create a content model that captures content types and attributes
  • Prepare gap analysis to identify new content to be developed
  • Define the content creation, editing, and approval workflows in an agile/Lean environment
  • Utilize data-driven insights, shifts in the market, and technology advancements to evolve the underlying content strategy, and communicate these changes to your team
  • Ensure that your team is measuring and evaluating content quality on an ongoing basis and using research and data to ensure content effectiveness
  • Manage to SEO standards and ensure that your team adheres to them as they enter content into the CMS
  • Help drive the improvement of Teach For America’s content management system and related tools for ensuring traceability of content
  • Meet specific annual quantitative goals for recruitment growth and qualitative measures for corps members and alumni
  • Represent content at the senior level within the marketing organization across all teams
  • Advocate for and operate under an agile/Lean UX environment with confidence
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree
Advanced Degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 

Prior Experience

  • 8 years of experience in digital marketing at an agency, not-for-profit, or in a complex corporate environment with a large national or multi-national organization; experience at an organization with a regional or distributed model preferred
  • 5-8 years of experience in content strategy or user experience at a mid-size to large organization
  • Demonstrated experience with user experience principles and how these impact the way content is structured, deployed, measured, and maintained
  • Experience in applying data analysis to content to form insights
  • Experience with analytics tools, including Google Analytics
  • Experience working with editorial teams, software engineers, and creatives

Skills

  • An ability to speak to people of all skill levels about content strategy principles
  • A track record of developing successful content strategies for organizations across multiple channels, at scale, over the course of multiple content cycles
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Fluency in conducting content audits, creating taxonomies, developing tagging structures, designing content models, and managing teams of strategists who take on any number of these activities
  • Passionate about educational equity as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness
  • Able to think big, generate ideas and drive solutions to complex problems in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • An exceptional writer and oral communicator, including the skills to write in others’ voices and in edit others’ work
  • Skilled in the art of persuasion, with a deep sense of humility and openness to the perspectives of others
  • Able to maintain a sense of possibility in the face of obstacles, and balances both short- and long-term results

Work Demands

  • National travel for in-person meetings will vary throughout the year, but is estimated to include an average of 1 trip per month; some weekend and evening work expected.
