Under the general supervision of the Associate Executive Director, the Aquatic Director is responsible for the general operation and maintenance of the aquatic facilities, recruiting and training of staff and volunteers, scheduling and implementation of programs which includes: swim team, swim lessons, community safety instruction and new program development.  The incumbent shares in general duties related to the total operation of the Norwich Family YMCA.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop an instructional strategy for beginning, intermediate, and advanced swim instruction.
  • Create and market programs aimed at delivering age appropriate instruction, with skilled based advancements.
  • Maintain a risk management program to deal with scheduled staff certifications, facility inspections, pool maintenance, and other regulatory requirements governed by the Public Health Department.
  • Create an annual Budget and insure through proper control that budget guidelines are followed.
  • Perform all documentation and log entries as requested.
  • Develop appropriate staff through staff training, while scheduling them to meet the member’s needs. This includes Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, Water Fitness instructors, etc.
  • Works closely with volunteers and volunteer committees.
  • Develop and oversee all responsibilities involved with a competitive swim team program that provides members the opportunity to contribute to a team effort while developing the YMCA philosophy on competitive sports.
  • Oversee all pool rentals, and pool parties.
  • Promote a fun and safe swimming pool environment, with the emphasis on the member.
  • Review, and Reintroduce to the Aquatic staff the importance of their jobs. Review job responsibilities on a daily basis, while reviewing pool rules, safety issues, and lifeguarding requirements.
  • Responsible for staff reviews, and individual files on each individual employee within your department.
  • Responsible for overseeing your department time cards, and whether they are correctly or incorrectly inputted.
  • Keep the front desk and all other department directors informed in a timely manner of important activities and projects that your department will be conducting and or participating in. Proper communication will improve all YMCA programs.
  • To perform required job responsibilities in a professional, responsible manner, while promoting and supporting the YMCA, its programs, and its staff, and members.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as required by the Executive Director. This may include: The Gus Macker Tournament; Open Houses; and or Family Nights
  • Administer and coordinate the development of new programs as well as expansion and modifications of existing programs in keeping with the YMCA mission and objectives.  Perform cost analysis of each new program before it has begun.  Work with agencies in the community and within the association to coordinate and develop new programs.
  • Supervise the recreational use of the Norwich Family YMCA pool including family swim, lap swim and special events.
  • Supervise overall operations and maintenance of the aquatic facility to include pool, pool deck, and storage areas.
  • Operate aquatic facilities in compliance with local Health Department regulations.
  • Operate aquatic facilities in compliance with our risk procedures and insurance limitation.
  • Coordinate the aquatic brochure and develop other aquatic brochures/fliers as needed. Seek out media contacts and promote aquatic programs.
  • Responsible to the YMCA as well as him/herself to seek and acquire training that is related to program and career growth within budgetary guidelines.
  • Be available for membership for questions, comments and tours.
  • Maintain strong relations with medical community to ensure membership growth and retention.
  • Responsible for holding monthly certification training for all part-time staff, which includes but not limited to the following classes; CPR-PR, First Aid, Lifeguarding
Educational Background: 
BA/BS in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Health Education or a related field and or equivalent Aquatic and Coaching experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • YMCA Team Leader preferred.
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Prior experience working with youth and/or adults in an aquatic environment.
  • Experience managing staff and working with volunteer committees.
  • Current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR-PR, AED and First Aid.  YMCA certification recommended.
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor or equivalent required.
  • Experience with competitive swimming
  • Experience with water exercise classes. .
  • Excellent human relation skills, good organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its capacity to build strong kids, families and communities. The ability to articulate and model YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibilities are essential.
