Assistant Aquatics Director is responsible for oversight of lifeguards and swim instructors.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Swim Lessons

  • Recruit and train new staff; assign instructors to swim lessons.
  • Supervise swim lessons while they are in progress in coordination with Director.
  • Lead Instruction for new swim instructors
  • Be available for parents and staff to ask questions; help to transfer participants to the correct class as needed; work with concerned parents or instructors to answer questions and address problems promptly and appropriately. 
  • Prepare/distribute class rosters at beginning of session; update as changes occur.
  • Plan and run swim instructor trainings during in-services
  • Distribute program evaluation forms in the last two weeks of the session. 
  • Work independently, make decisions, supervise and plan. Be able to solve problems and appropriately deal with difficult situations. 
  • Design and publish swim lesson brochures; perform program input into CCC; assist Member Services staff with registrations and answering questions during the registration period.
  • Assign and schedule private lessons. 

Lifeguards

  • Recruit and train new staff; perform pre-hire tests on incoming lifeguards to ensure skills quality.
  • Maintain adequate coverage for pools by monitoring, planning, and publishing the schedule each month.  Update the printed schedule when there are significant changes.
  • Supervise lifeguards
  • Lead Instruction for new lifeguards
  • Provide needed support, breaks, or coverage for lifeguards.  
  • Cover open shifts as needed

Trainings

  • Coordinate and teach American Red Cross staff recertification trainings.
  • Coordinate, plan, and teach as needed in the YMCA Lifeguard Training program. 
  • Assist Aquatic’s Director in planning and running staff meetings and trainings.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and meet regularly with Aquatic’s Directors.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by Aquatic Director. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Candidate must have a minimum of 2 years supervisory management experience with aquatic programs and minimum of 2 years aquatic instruction/teaching.
  • Must have YMCA Lifeguard and Swim Lesson Instructor or be willing to acquire within 6 months.
  • Having swim team experience is preferred.
  • Must have or will acquire the following YMCA certifications within six months of employment: Aquatic Management, Lifeguard Trainer, Swim Lessons Trainer, Pool Operator on Location
  • Candidate must have strong desire to teach and train staff.
  • Must be able to work variable hours including nights and weekends.
