The YMCA Healthy Living Director is a nationally certified fitness professional who works with clients and directs all aspects of personal training, Regymen and wellness for the Family Center including recruitment of new members and retention of existing members. Develops, organizes and implements high quality, member-focused YMCA health and wellness programs. Provides leadership to personal training, Regymen and health and wellness teams. Develops plans and implements new procedures and methods within Association guidelines to achieve strategic goals. Assists the Family Center Executive team in development of member centered programs and provides a leadership role to the annual fundraising campaign and key Family Center initiatives. Ensures a safe, fun, and enjoyable experience for members.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Division of Duties:

  • 35% Personal Training – ensuring budget is met, including performing PT sessions as Director; ongoing recruitment of new personal trainers
  • 30% Regymen – ensuring budget is met, including teaching as needed; scheduling at Blocker; staff hiring, training and supervision; promotion
  • 30% Wellness – develop and maintain systems to ensure wellness appointments convert to PT and Regymen sessions
  • 5% Annual campaign support at Blocker

Priorities:

  • Responsible for development and execution of Personal Training, Regymen and Health & Wellness Association goals
  • Support recruitment of new members and retention of existing members through the creation of successful marketing plans, strategies and health & wellness programming to achieve financial goals of Family Center
  • Supervision of all aspects of Personal Trainers, Regymen and wellness coaches at the Blocker YMCA

The Health and Wellness Director must understand and be willing to learn the necessary skills required for the successful completion of duties including:

Budget and Financial Performance

  • Prepares the annual expense and revenue budget for the above-mentioned departments
  • Meets specific Family Center budget goals including personal training packages and Regymen to include customer service and client retention
  • Exercises necessary controls to assure operations are carried out in a balanced fiscal position

Program Development and Membership Engagement

  • Performs 15 hours of direct service hours in a combination of training clients, teaching Regymen and working fitness floor
  • Designs fitness programs at the Blocker YMCA for all clients in addition to initiating, supporting and directing programs for the entire wellness staff
  • Manages own client base
  • Thorough understanding of client needs and comprehensive knowledge of how to use all exercise equipment
  • Conducts evaluation of all the programs that they have designed and those that their staff use for clients
  • Monitors the achievements of program objectives and exercises appropriate actions to assure the achievement of the objectives are the highest quality programs and services. Follow quality guidelines as outlined in the Association Goldbook​
  • Ensures safety, cleanliness, and function of Wellness Center fitness floors, Regymen studio and equipment
  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs

Team Performance Toward Organizational Goals

  • Recruits, onboards, hires, trains, schedules, and directs personal trainers, Regymen coaches, Wellness coaches and volunteers
  • Responsible for training and evaluating trainers/coaches performances including providing feedback on professionalism, service to clients and skills
  • Supervises Wellness coaches, Regymen coaches and Personal Trainers
  • Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals​
  • Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete
  • Assist in the leadership of family center special events, (i.e. Healthy Kids Day, Active Older Adults Day, Traveling Y, Special Events etc.)
  • Participates in staff meetings and/or related meetings

Fundraising

  • Successfully meets Annual Giving support campaign goals at Blocker Norfolk YMCA
  • Leads assigned aspects of YMCA fundraising activities and special events

Professional Development

  • Nationally recognized and certified personal trainer and Regymen coach
  • Participate in Association Health and Wellness Cabinet and serve as Regymen specialist
  • Completes trainings as required, including New Staff Orientation
  • Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads’ policies, procedures, rules, regulations

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in Health & Fitness or related field is preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must hold a current Personal Training Certification form a nationally recognized organization with NCAA Accreditation
  • Must obtain Regymen certifications within 30 days of employment
  • Must hold a current CPR/AED certification or obtain within 30 days of employment
  • One or more years of supervisory experience in the above-mentioned programs
  • Strong human relation skills to facilitate positive relationships with participants, members and staff

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Requires a person of maturity and good judgment, who can operate with a minimum of guidance from the Executive Director
  • Requires ability to exercise appropriate independent judgment, to assess facts and issues, and make non-routine decisions regarding day-to-day operational problems and issues
  • Requires effective team-building and team-leadership skills
  • Must maintain cooperative, functional relationships with senior leadership team, peers, and subordinates
  • Must maintain a positive, energetic attitude toward YMCA work, goals, and values
  • Must have ability to respond to emergencies and to travel as needed for operational management, including on-site presence in managing major operational problems
  • Must have superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to respond to a wide variety of constituencies, including staff, volunteers, members, program participants, vendors, community leaders, etc.
  • Perform the duties of direct reports as needed

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidate must possess sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of the position and to supervise program activities.

  • Will be required to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, push, and lift up to 100 pounds
  • Physically able to successfully complete required certifications
  • While performing duties the employee may occasionally work in the outside weather conditions, and is exposed to wet, cold and /or humid conditions
  • Continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multitasking
  • Will be exposed to cleaning supplies.
  • Must be able to perform the duties of those they supervise
  • Flexibility with work schedule is necessary; evening, weekend and holiday shifts may be required for coverage
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $35,568.00 - $40,000.00
