Works with staff, volunteers, members, chapters, the Retired Teachers Association divisions (RTA), and other AARP divisions to achieve AARP’s legislative, social impact, communications, and member value goals in the state. Develops a presence in communities through strengthening visibility with state, federal, and local lawmakers and executives, enhancing volunteer capacity, building community partnerships, delivering AARP programs and activities, and outreach to AARP members. Develops strong volunteer teams and engages volunteers in community outreach, key relationship building with relevant local leaders, grassroots activities, educational forums, and advocacy support. Leads programmatic campaigns statewide in an integrated way with other state office colleagues. Works to engage members and volunteers from diverse communities in the activities of the organization. Fully engages volunteers in AARP state plan activities. Incumbents in this position may perform all or a significant combination of the tasks described below depending on the operational requirements of the assigned location.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serves as a member of the state team and is responsible for the development and implementation of systems for effectively involving volunteers in all aspects of AARP’s work with chapters, units, external organizations, academic and business communities, and policy makers.  Develops and implements volunteer teams and roles related to activities that advance AARP’s strategic and legislative priorities.  Provides volunteer resource management expertise to the state team.
  • Expands awareness of AARP and our priorities among community and public policy leaders. Identifies and positions AARP as a critical voice for age-eligible individuals, but also demonstrates relevance to all generations. Manages and coordinates opportunities with public-speaking venues and other high profile venues, in collaboration with the Communications team.
  • Builds effective grassroots and key contacts capacity within the assigned region to enable effective communication and impact on elected national and state officials representing the region.
  • Engages members, volunteers, and chapters in grassroots, community outreach, communications and advocacy activities in support of the AARP state plan. Organizes and maintains visible and effective coalitions and partnerships dealing with volunteer engagement, social impact, advocacy, and member value strategic activities.
  • Works in close partnership with staff and volunteer leaders to recruit, match, orient, train, support, and manage volunteers. Creates and implements volunteer recognition plans. Provides assistance and support on performance management and coaching in partnership with the volunteers’ supervisors. Provides technical assistance in the areas of meeting planning, communications, skill development, etc. Participates in training volunteers on priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies, relationship building, and state-specific political and communications processes.
  • Works in collaboration with state colleagues and national office staff to promote AARP’s strategic issues, priorities, programs, and activities. As appropriate, facilitates interaction and communication with national office partners to request technical assistance and ensure that the proper resources are available for staff and volunteers, including programmatic content, talking points, updates, and briefing materials.
  • Makes presentations at workshops and conferences, as appropriate. Works with statewide volunteers on primary issues, community service, communications, and advocacy efforts. Ensures AARP is seen as a visible force in community service and public policy development by educating staff, volunteers, members, government and elected officials, and the public.
  • Enhances AARP’s reputation among non-traditional partners, including community leaders, businesses, educators, and policy makers. Initiates new relationships and sustains existing ones.
  • Effectively manages Association resources and processes to advance the state plan. Develops, manages, and administers regional and/or function-specific budgets. 
  • Demonstrates AARP Leadership Behaviors in all interactions.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Human Resources, and/or Non-Profit Management, Social or Human Sciences, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5-7 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.  Demonstrates a strong understanding of the state’s political and human services environment.
  • Bilingual skills may be required for specific assignments based on the needs of the membership segment supported.
  • Travel may be required at least 50% of work time.
