Under the supervision of the Operations Director, or designated supervisor, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA, the Youth and Family Program Director is responsible for the growth and administration of all youth, teen, and family programs.  This includes numerous sports programs, summer camp, YMCA IZONE wellness, and outside physical education and local community partnerships. This position supervises the Associate Child Care Director and numerous part-time and seasonal youth department employees and volunteers to ensure successful programming. The Program Director will provide leadership in developing and maintaining safe, quality programs for the YMCA community.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  • Promote a professional values-based culture by leading with the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Participates in promoting YMCA membership through assisting in recruiting and retaining members.
  • Actively participates in branch leadership, meetings, director on duty and branch events. Actively participates in Association launch teams, committees and/or leadership teams to promote Branch/Association unity.
  • Promotes and participates in YMCA fundraising efforts to include Annual Giving Campaigns through recruitment and leadership of a team of volunteers.
  • Supervision of the Associate Child Care Director and related programs/budgets. 
  • Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates staff for youth, teen, and family programs.
  • Monitors and purchases necessary equipment and supplies as allowed in the budget guidelines.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates volunteers as needed in program areas.
  • Organize, plan, promote, and schedule programs and special events in coordination with other department directors, following association standards.
  • Develops and leads age-appropriate sports and enrichment programs, including camps and IZONE activities.
  • Develops a comprehensive Camp program, that include themes, special activities, field trips, games, and special events that will incorporate the mission of the YMCA to develop character values.
  • Surveys communities’ needs on an ongoing basis that result in the development of new and innovative programs to meet branch and Association goals.
  • Develops family programming at our branch. 
  • Responds to member and community inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Works in partnership with our child care and wellness programs Directors to coordinate scheduling and facility usage. Provides support to other related branch program areas as needed.
  • Evaluates all programs to ensure quality and successful future planning in coordination with Association schedule.
  • Develops, monitors, and controls related operating budgets for areas of direct responsibility.
  • Manages system for tracking attendance/participants in all program areas.
  • Follow department Platinum standards.
  • Manages payroll for department.
  • Actively participates in branch leadership, meetings, director on duty and branch events.
  •  Ensure all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow branch Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
  • Promotes and encourages YMCA membership and participation through available resources, cross marketing of programs, program guides and schedules, and special events.
  • Provides leadership to the branch by participating in branch meetings and events, association leadership teams and task forces as assigned to increase communication, awareness and quality in the organization.
  • Understands and relates the purpose of the YMCA to staff and volunteers, organizes and incorporates values in all aspects of our programs.
  • Provides leadership and participates in the Branch Annual Giving campaign through volunteer recruitment, organization and staff support for a community team.
  • Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Health and Well-Being Department and branch operations to ensure an excellent member experience.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred or equivalent experience required; core competency and course work required per page 19 of the Virginia Department of Social Services Licensing Standards.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of two years of programming for youth.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete and maintain required trainings to include: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment.
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check, Virginia State Police background check, and Child Protective Services check.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $36,207.00 - $45,259.00
