Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Preserve inspections and taking responsibility for follow-up actions as needed (may include dealing with unauthorized or incompatible use of trails, camping, dumping, etc.)
  • General Preserve maintenance (includes maintenance of signage, trailheads, kiosks, registration boxes, trails, boundaries, and trash removal).
  • Invasive plant monitoring and manual control in key areas of select Preserves
  • Coordinating and hosting workdays with volunteers to complete more extensive Preserve maintenance or invasive plant control activities.
  • Assisting stewardship staff with ecological monitoring as needed.
  • Conservation easement monitoring and reporting as needed.
  • Preserve signage construction, maintenance, and installation
  • Interacting with the general public and preserve neighbors by providing information, answering questions, and enforcing Preserve policies.
  • Maintenance of basic equipment such as hand and power tools, chainsaws, etc.
  • The Seasonal Land Steward will be responsible for documenting their activities on Preserves by maintaining an online work log, managing natural resource spatial data, and writing inspection reports for TNC’s Preserves.      
  • The Seasonal Land Steward will be supervised by the Conservancy’s Southern NH Stewardship Ecologist.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff, interns, or volunteers. 
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.                                                                            
  • Requires long hours in isolated settings, often alone. 
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.                   
  • Works under either close or little supervision depending on the nature of particular work tasks and projects.  Majority of time the Seasonal Land Steward will work independently in the accomplishment of routine tasks and projects (with the opportunity to coordinate assistance from volunteers as needed).
  • Is flexible with work schedule including a willingness to work extended hours on given days and occasional weekend days.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.       
  • Experience and competence in the safe use and maintenance of various types of tools & equipment (i.e., assorted hand & electric powered tools, lawn mower, weed wrenches, brush saw, motor vehicles, etc.)
  • Experience reading and interpreting assorted maps, independently orient oneself, and work competently and confidently in the outdoors.
  • Experience working in a team environment.                                           
  • Experience performing physically demanding hands-on work; sometimes on challenging terrain, in hazardous conditions, in variable weather conditions and/or at remote locations.                
  • Possess fundamental GPS and computer skills in order to maintain preserve and other records.
  • Valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management.                    
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems. 
  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species in New Hampshire as relevant to completing preserve management activities.
  • Ability to identify invasive plant species common to New Hampshire and experience with control and monitoring projects.
  • Ability to accept and follow instructions and take responsibility.
  • Experience working productively and efficiently (a “self-starter”) alone minus direct supervision; including ability to independently plan, problem solve, improvise and adapt to shifting demands.                                   
  • Basic carpentry skills as may be needed to build or fix Preserve signage and kiosks. 
  • Experience working with volunteers and/or leading volunteer work activities
  • PC familiarity, including database knowledge.
  • Safe and competent use of chainsaw; including training in chainsaw safety and maintenance.
  • Possess a friendly, positive disposition including experience of interacting well with people of diverse ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to contribute to a collaborative working environment in support of The Nature Conservancy mission.
  • Ability to be aware and observant as well as objectively assess risks, employ sound judgment and avoid potential hazards.

  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.                                                                                           
  • Requires long hours in isolated settings.
