The Coastal Science Specialist coordinates and leads the execution of field and office activities related to marsh and living shoreline projects and coordinates small teams of TNC and partner staff, student interns, and/or volunteers. S/he schedules field days, monitors a variety of physical and biological parameters on multiple simultaneous projects, is responsible for and maintains all sampling equipment and supplies, collects biological samples, records and enters data (including GIS data), summarizes literature, coordinates activities with partner organizations, and assists with the installation of living shorelines. The Coastal Science Specialist will also be responsible for towing, launching, and operating small watercraft to reach project sites.
As part of field work, the Coastal Science Specialist will work in harsh weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. The position requires someone who can work long hours and a flexible schedule including occasional weekends and evenings.
- Coordinate and lead field monitoring activities occurring July-September.
- Maintain project records including electronic databases, perform data analysis and produce project reports.
- Supervises no staff, but will coordinate and direct small work groups, including staff and volunteers.
- Makes day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
- May work under infrequent supervision.
- May purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget.
- Must hold a NJ Boater Safety Certificate or have the ability to complete a NJ Safe Boating Course prior to July 5th
- Experience conducting statistical analysis
- Experience interpreting ecological data and producing reports
- Experience in planning and implementing outdoor fieldwork
- Experience driving a truck with a trailer and operating small watercraft
- Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, Web browsers, etc.
- Experience performing physical work under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS in environmental science-related field and 1 to 2 years of relevant experience or the equivalent
- Experience planning and implementing fieldwork and/or conducting plant and animal monitoring (preferably in a coastal system)
- Experience using R Statistical Software to conduct data analysis
- Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources
- Experience working with or knowledge of coastal systems
- Ability to use a handheld GPS unit and ArcGis software to collect and manipulate spatial data
- Experience leading small teams including volunteers
