The Multimedia Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a full-time Video Editor/Producer for the New York office. The Video Editor/Producer will work closely with HRW’s researchers around the world and the media team to help create compelling video and multimedia content. The ideal candidate will conceive of innovative story forms and collaborate easily with human rights, graphics, social media and audience experts to create impactful videos. The Multimedia Division is part of the Media Department and works to determine the best messages, the right audiences, and the best vehicle to raise public awareness of the human rights violations HRW investigates and documents. This position reports to the Associate Multimedia Director, based in New York.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Produce and edit visually compelling and journalistically excellent videos that amplify, explain and tell stories about the people and issues at the center of the human rights movement.
  • Collaborate with Human Rights Watch researchers and freelance videographers throughout the production process.
  • Train researchers and other staff to shoot video and collect multimedia content.
  • Shape stories and coordinate production with freelancers and HRW staff.
  • Research, select and edit archival and open source footage as well as visual evidence to help tell stories.
  • Conduct strong video interviews.
  • Develop narrative storylines and script when needed.
  • Execute quick-turnaround videos and longer-form, larger scale projects.
  • Edit for both linear and interactive features.
  • Work with outside designers, illustrators and animators as needed.
  • Seek out new formats, platforms, partners and audiences for our content.
  • Help take video products through the review process and incorporate edits.
  • Prepare and publish the work on various platforms.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree is required. A degree in English, Communications, International Relations, or a related field is highly desirable.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of five years of experience working in journalism and/or documentary filmmaking.
  • A dynamic portfolio demonstrating a range of editing skills, from highly polished narratives to short social videos and quick-turnaround news pieces.
  • A love of making stories out of range of media and materials; experience working with a variety of footage of varying quality.
  • Advanced editing in Adobe Premiere; proficiency in Adobe After Effects.
  • Solid producing, writing and scripting skills.
  • Experience creating emotional, engaging stories from non-fiction/verité footage.
  • Knowledge of human rights, current events and key international issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills in English is required; multiple languages a plus.
  • Experience with audience engagement and impact campaigns a plus.
