US Program Intern (Undergraduate)

The US Program of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking undergraduate student interns for the spring 2018 semester. Ideally, the intern will be available 10 to 15 hours a week beginning in January 2018 until May 2018. The internship will primarily focus on the research related to US human rights problems, especially those related to criminal justice and sexual assault. The intern will learn about bail and sentencing reform, private probation companies, criminalization of drug possession, and the mishandling of sexual assault cases. 

This is an unpaid internship. Applicants who are offered an internship, but who are not US permanent residents, US citizens, or in possession of a valid student visa, must apply for a J-1 visa through a sponsoring organization. This process can take several weeks and applicants will have to incur their own costs.
Areas of Responsibility: 
Intern will learn and be exposed to: 
  • Conducting basic legal research; 
  • Using available resources to conduct such research, including reviewing media, policy papers and academic reports; 
  • Using complex research tools such as specific legal libraries and platforms; 
  • Understanding the historical context of the issue, when applicable; 
  • Monitoring legislation and US polices related to criminal justice; 
  • Conducting data analysis, when appropriate; 
  • Identifying and understanding key issues; 
  • Compiling case histories and researching relevant state and federal policies; 
  • Presenting information in a compelling manner; 
  • Contributing to some basic advocacy activities such as drafting and/or submitting official requests to courthouses, departments and agencies and contacting official representatives, when appropriate; and 
  • Close supervision and evaluation sessions to provide feedback and support. 

Additional opportunities: 
  • Direct exposure to the workings of a large, international human rights organization; 
  • Induction training on the internal working of HRW; 
  • Access to HRW materials and publications; 
  • Attending select in-house events such as a speaker series events, and other events organized within the organization, particularly for the interns; 
  • Attending internal staff meeting and outside meetings and events related to human rights field; and 
  • Academic credit (students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements).
Skills/Experience: 
  • Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate program for the duration of the internship term is required; 
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights and strong interest in US domestic human and civil rights issues, particularly related to criminal justice and sexual assault policy is highly desirable; 
  • Relevant coursework and experience completing social science research is highly desirable; 
  • Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are essential; and 
  • Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.
