Teach For America New York seeks a Senior Managing Director, Development Operations (SMDDO) to ensure we have the team and infrastructure in place to secure the financial resources needed to pursue our mission. The SMDDO will support TFA NY’s efforts to consistently raise $15M to $18M annually to support the annual operating budget.  

The successful candidate is energized by building and developing high-performing teams.  They are passionate about TFA’s mission, believe deeply in the importance of investing people in our work, and have high expectations for how TFA is viewed by external constituents. The SMDDO reports to the VP, Development, manages an eight-person Development team, including four direct reports, as well as an event consultant. The SMDDO sits on the regional leadership team, and works closely with TFA’s National Development team. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Development Systems & Progress to Goal (40%)

  • In collaboration with the VP, Development, lead the team in establishing and executing concrete plans to achieve short and long-term revenue goals 
  • Implement and maintain team-wide systems to: regularly assess team-wide progress to goals identify what is driving and impeding progress, develop solutions to address gaps, and adjust course as necessary
  • Model and manage to operational excellence through all stages of the fundraising cycle. (i.e., donor and stewardship tracking, data management, meeting prep and downloads, and gift processing systems)
  • Evaluate and assess the effectiveness of donor retention strategies, and leverage best practice and other innovative strategies to improve donor satisfaction

Team Management & Execution (40%)

  • Manage two Directors, (Individual Giving, Corporate & Foundation Relations) in leading their sub-teams to accomplish ambitious stream-specific fundraising goals
  • With the support of an event consultant, plan and execute TFA NY’s Annual Benefit Dinner, a high profile event that has historically raised at least $5M in annual support, serving as the liaison to the honoree
  • Manage the Associate, Development Operations to support cross-functional activities across portfolios, ensure finances and data are tracked and processed appropriately, to inform strategy and course corrections
  • Cultivate a strong and supportive team culture on the Development team
  • Promote and oversee the professional development of direct reports and the full Development team, coaching and developing them to serve as strong stewards of our large donor network, as well as engaged and culturally competent members of the regional team

Regional Responsibilities (20%)

  • Contribute to the work and decision-making of the New York regional leadership team
  • Participate in all-staff (region and organization-wide) activities and events such as selection, confirmation, strategic planning and summits
  • Engage directly with members of the Programs and Alumni & Community Affairs teams to internalize and be able to compellingly communicate regional priorities and impact
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10+ years of work experience including 5-7 years managing a team (development experience preferred)
  • Knowledge of the philanthropic landscape in New York preferred
  • Exceptional planning and operational skills
  • Ability to be attentive to both big picture and details
  • Ability to translate vision and strategy into clear operational plans
  • Ability to build strong relationships with others in challenging situations
  • Track record of influencing others to achieve outcomes through sophisticated relationship management
  • Impeccable ethical standards  and an uncommon level of personal responsibility in driving towards ambitious goals
  • Agility and resilience to navigate a large, complex national organization and competitive landscape
  • Excellent formal and informal communications skills with an ability to convey complex ideas concisely and compellingly to a range of external audiences

Work Demands

  • Ability to work some evenings, weekends, and early mornings
  • Ability and willingness to travel on public transportation to meetings and events around NYC
