The Senior Editor is a full-time journalism position working within Audubon’s content team to produce editorial for Audubon.org and Audubon magazine. It’s the perfect job for a journalist with proven editing and top-editing chops, a penchant for keeping the publishing train on its tracks, and a passion for birds and conservation. The Senior Editor, while based at Audubon’s New York headquarters, may occasionally travel across the organization’s network.

Areas of Responsibility:
- Pitch, write, and edit stories for both Audubon magazine and Audubon.org, ranging from news updates and explainers to profiles and features.
- Top-edit front- and back-of-the-book sections of Audubon magazine, as well as content for Audubon.org.
- Oversee, with the production staff, the flow of copy for the print issue, including to a team of remote fact-checkers and copy editors.
- Interface with other teams within Audubon to understand key organizational concerns and priorities.
- Stay abreast of news important to conservation and to the preservation of birds.
- Collaborate with Audubon’s art team to execute stories that are highly visual and, when possible, leverage multimedia, data journalism, and other journalistic tools.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in writing, journalism, English, or a related field, or in a science or environmental field with intensive journalism experience, required. Background in science writing or environmental journalism preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- Three to five years of editorial experience at a media outlet, including at a print magazine.
- Sharp, incisive line-editing with ability to step back and shape the big picture.
- Ability to home in on smart story angles, manage multiple deadlines and workflows, and easily pivot between individual and collaborative projects.
- Tech-savviness, including proficiency with InCopy and CMS.
- Interest in environmental issues, conservation, birds and/or birding.
- Fluency in Spanish a plus.
