Senior Director, Finance

NRDC is seeking a Senior Director of Finance to work with the Finance team in our New York office.  Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and serving as a member of the senior management team of the Finance Department, the Senior Director will be an integral part of the team managing NRDC’s cash, endowment portfolio, and employee retirement plans, and will work closely with the CFO on the overall strategy and management of a best-in-class finance organization, including strengthening partnerships with internal stakeholders and leading cross-functional strategic, control, and infrastructure initiatives.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Finance

  • Oversees cash flow planning and management; ensures availability of funds as needed
  • Invests NRDC’s funds based on guidance provided by the Investment Committee and in conjunction with investment advisor; responsibilities include manager onboarding, portfolio implementation, and performance monitoring
  • Participates in quarterly Retirement Plan Committee meetings and works closely with plan advisor to address issues pertaining to both the frozen Defined Benefit Plan and existing 403(b) Defined Contribution Plan
  • Assists CFO as management liaison for the Investment Committee and various board working groups

Strategy and Team Management

  • Assists CFO in setting and managing strategic priorities within Finance; drives cross-functional strategic, infrastructure and control initiatives
  • Partners with Controller to cultivate a robust risk management culture across Accounting and Finance; contributes to NRDC’s enterprise risk management framework
  • Assists CFO in overall team management and development
Educational Background: 
A minimum of a BS; a CFA, CPA and/or MBA would be a plus
Skills/Experience: 

The Senior Director, Finance will be a seasoned and mature leader with at least 10 years of broad organizational management and investment management experience, preferably including familiarity with multi-asset portfolio management.  The Senior Director will have the following experience and attributes:

  • Experience in a senior business management role, partnering with executive staff driving the development and implementation of large-scale transformational changes
  • Strong analytical skills and experience translating a strategic vision into an operational model
  • Excellent coalition building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; a persuasive negotiator who is able to achieve consensus amongst differing opinions
  • Past experience successfully partnering with IT staff to manage and uplift critical process flows and systems
  • Exceptional leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent execution, project management, and organization skills
  • An effective communicator at all levels in the organization, with strong oral and written skills and a willingness to share information
  • A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality
  • Strong commitment to the professional development of staff; successful track record of recruiting and retaining a diverse team
