Schneider Eastern Sustainable Energy & Climate Fellow

This job is no longer available

NRDC is seeking a Schneider Eastern Sustainable Energy & Climate Fellow to work with the Climate & Clean Energy Team in our New York office.  This is a one-year Fellowship Position expected to commence in the Summer or Fall of 2019.

The Schneider Fellowships were created to promote the awareness of environmental issues resulting from our past and present energy use. The Fellowship program supports the efforts of non-governmental organizations, such as NRDC, that are chosen based on their efforts to identify and solve the challenges of developing a more sustainable energy future.

The Climate and Clean Energy Program focuses on fighting climate change by cutting carbon pollution and expanding the contribution of energy efficiency and renewable energy to ensure the clean, reliable and affordable energy services that a healthy and sustainable economy needs.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • The Fellow will be directly involved in developing and carrying out advocacy strategies to promote clean energy policies. The work will focus on the Eastern region, but will likely coordinate closely with other regions as well.
  • The Fellow will be an integral part of the broader team that works on renewables, energy efficiency, clean vehicles and smart grid deployment issues, using strategies that include guiding utility action, innovative financing and business models, pilots and demonstration programs, and regulatory interventions. The emphasis will be to help deploy these clean energy technologies at scale, including meeting and exceeding state and regional climate and clean energy goals, while assessing approaches to replicate these efforts in other regions.

Previous Fellows in the NY office have worked on projects that include: regulatory proceedings related to New York State’s Reforming the Energy Vision, analyzing how to help large scale deployment of renewables nationwide, and how distributed energy resources (such as energy efficiency, demand response, small-scale renewables and energy storage) should be valued and incorporated in organized energy markets.

Some additional examples of projects going for the coming year include the expansion of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to include additional states, and the emerging regional Transportation Climate Initiative to cut carbon emissions from vehicles and modernize the transportation sector.

Skills/Experience:
  • The Fellow will gain skills in research and analysis, written advocacy, oral advocacy, and how to participate in legislative and regulatory processes.
  • The Fellow will be an integral part of NRDC’s team and will gain exposure to a variety of activities including attending policy meetings, working with private sector stakeholders, joint advocacy with other partners, policy analysis and development, and legislative and regulatory research and drafting.
Compensation/Benefits:

Compensation will be based on a nonprofit scale and will include consideration of degrees held, professional training, and years of relevant experience.

About Us
Mission:

The Natural Resources Defense Council's purpose is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life depends.

We work to restore the integrity of the elements that sustain life -- air, land and water -- and to defend endangered natural places.

We seek to establish sustainability and good stewardship of the Earth as central ethical imperatives of human society. NRDC affirms the integral place of human beings in the environment.

We strive to protect nature in ways that advance the long-term welfare of present and future generations.

We work to foster the fundamental right of all people to have a voice in decisions that affect their environment. We seek to break down the pattern of disproportionate environmental burdens borne by people of color and others who face social or economic inequities. Ultimately, NRDC strives to help create a new way of life for humankind, one that can be sustained indefinitely without fouling or depleting the resources that support all life on Earth.
