NRDC’s editorial team is looking for a careful reporter and talented writer to create quick-turnaround newsy stories and video scripts about NRDC issues and work that will gain traction on social media.

Ideal candidates will have strong editorial skills, a shrewd eye for good story ideas, and a passion for environmental and public health skills.

The position reports to the Editorial Director and will work closely with the multimedia, digital advocacy, and social media teams.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Pitches, writes, and produces NRDC-authored Breaking News blogs about updates in NRDC advocacy as well as Latest News stories highlighting campaign developments and events such as marches, protests, town hall meetings, or conferences
  • Tracks the Trump administration’s anti-environmental moves and logs them on Trump Watch
  • Works with colleagues to develop and produce readable video scripts that promotes awareness of major reports, court decisions, and other public education and engagement opportunities
  • Collaborates with the social media team and program staff to pinpoint audience questions for Expert Q&A columns
  • Highlights successes of the resistance movement by writing the Cause & Effect column for onEarth
  • Combs through the NRDC archives and collaborates with program staffers to create “what’s at stake” top-level messaging and comprehensive timelines for NRDC.org campaign pages
  • Writes copy for the quarterly print newsletter
  • Assists editors as needed with research and reporting for other products
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or greater in English, journalism, communications, or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • 1-3 years experience writing and reporting for a print or digital media outlet
  • Passion for environmental and public health issues
  • The ability to understand and adopt NRDC’s voice for a variety of projects and audiences
  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously and organizing time efficiently
  • Strong familiarity with Facebook, Instagram, Medium, and Twitter with a knack for writing successful content for each platform
