The Multimedia Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a fixed-term, part-time Multimedia Systems Administrator for the New York office. The Multimedia Systems Administrator is responsible for maintaining HRW’s digital video systems, including the media archive. The position is part-time at 20 hours per week from April 15 until June 28. The Administrator reports to the Multimedia Director based in New York.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage digital systems for HRW’s Multimedia Archive and video production unit, including digital asset management system and NAS servers; 
  • Support technical workflow for the organization’s digital media production unit using Adobe Premiere/macOS;
  • Maintain and support global distribution platform, work with developers to resolve issues that arise;
  • Perform systems monitoring of servers and climate-controlled areas and work with HRW Operations and IT staff to resolve issues;
  • Troubleshoot and liaise with IT and third-party support as needed;
  • Oversee the continued ingest and processing of born digital assets into HRW NAS using pre-programmed BASH scripts;
  • Maintain Multimedia Archives backups and recover data upon request;
  • Field incoming footage requests from staff and search archives for material;
  • Order equipment for video production and researchers and perform basic equipment installation or setup; 
  • Field technical support questions from Multimedia production team and assist with video and audio transcoding for import into Adobe Premiere and/or for delivery for translation or transcription;
  •  Provide consultation for freelance videographers and staff for efficient data transmission from the field, including upload to HRW’s NY headquarters;
  • Assist with technical emergencies as needed and work with Digital Systems Manager and IT to resolve unexpected issues; and
  •  Perform other responsibilities as many be required.
Educational Background: 
A degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Media Archiving, Communications, or similar related field is required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of two years of experience in digital media management for web and television broadcast, preferably in a media outlet is required.
  • Proficiency in administering digital systems used for video archiving and production is required. 
  • Familiarity with HD video acquisition, media management and sound recording are required. 
  • Familiarity with BASH scripting and/or use of command line tools is required. 
  • Understanding of compression formats and standards for broadcast television, Mac OSX, Adobe Premiere, and Compressor are required. 
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English are required. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required. 
  • Capacity to appropriately plan and prioritize and to manage multiple, sometimes competing demands efficiently in a challenging, fast-paced environment are required.
