The Multimedia Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Multimedia Archivist (Officer) to help maintain the asset management system. The Multimedia Division is part of the Media Department that works to determine the best messages, the right audiences, and the best vehicle to raise public awareness of the human rights violations HRW investigates and documents.

This is a fixed-term position for six months with a flexible work schedule of up to 24 hours per week (60% schedule). This position is based in New York and reports to the Senior Manager of Archives and Digital Systems, based in New York.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Organize and process HRW digital photo collections in accordance with naming and arrangement standards and prepare for ingest into Multimedia Archives Digital Asset Management System;
  • Research new Digital Asset Management tools for collection-level processing and description. Perform analysis of incoming HD formats and make recommendations for care and handling.;
  • Perform collection assessment of physical items in the archive;
  • Create new catalog records in the Multimedia Archives Digital Asset Management System;
  • Field incoming footage requests from staff and search archives for material;
  • Oversee the continued ingest and processing of born-digital assets into HRW NAS;
  • Field digital media related questions from Multimedia production team and assist with import and connectivity into Adobe Premiere;
  • Provide consultation for freelance videographers on naming and HRW Multimedia arrangement standards;
  • Reconcile data on ancillary drives and storage media against data stored in collections;
  • Explore options for acquisition and digitization of additional collections within HRW;
  • Fulfill requests and deliver outputs in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Multimedia division; and
  • Carry out any other tasks as required.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Media Archiving, Communications, or similar related field is required. An advanced (graduate) degree is preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of two years of experience in digital media management for web and television broadcast, preferably in a media outlet, is required.
  • Proficiency performing archival processing for digital collections is required;
  • Familiarity with HD video acquisition, media management and sound recording is required;
  • Understanding of compression formats and standards for broadcast television is required; mac OS, Adobe Premiere, and Compressor preferred;
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English is required;
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required;
  • Capacity to appropriately plan and prioritize and to manage multiple, sometimes competing demands efficiently in a challenging, fast-paced environment are required.
