The Science Technician works closely with the Urban Marine Ecologist, NYC Program staff, and partner organizations to research and gather data at New York Harbor restoration sites.
The Science Technician collects data at marine restoration sites throughout New York Harbor and in the laboratory to evaluate the conditions at and performance of restoration sites. They manage data and create monitoring reports to track performance at the sites.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Performs field and lab work.
- Maintains research equipment including water quality monitors.
- Collects and compiles data, resolves disparities, and modifies processes to generate reports.
- May work with a small group of staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.
- May purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 1-year experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with environmental data collection in field settings
- Experience with spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets)
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Experience with statistical software (e.g., R).
- Experience with water quality monitoring instruments.
- Ability to interpret guidelines and evaluate information and adapt accordingly.
- Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment.
- Time management skills.
