The Linux Systems Administrator will play a critical role in operating and maintaining our infrastructure and contribute towards business-technology aligned initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication, problem-solving, mission-critical operations mind-set, and hands-on technical skills. He/She thrives in collaborative environments, embraces mind-set of continuous improvements and learning, and operates proactively to achieve desired outcomes.

Furthermore, the Linux Systems Administrator will collaborate across functions in IT to monitor, manage, configure, restore, and build infrastructure components, systems, and services using technology platforms and tools including RedHat Enterprise Linux, VMWare, EMC Unity / DataDomain / Avamar / Networker, Nagios, Microsoft Azure, and ServiceNow. The ideal candidate will play an instrumental role in operations activities including on-call rotations, systems maintenance, incident / change / problem / capacity management. This person may also play a role in defining technical requirements and implementing infrastructure solutions that meet business objectives through partnerships with other IT functions in software development, middleware operations, DevOps, Windows infrastructure, and database operations.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Operations (60%)

  • Provide timely resolution of break-fix incidents, automated alerts, information requests, and change requests
  • Manage and perform business as usual (BAU) systems maintenance and operations activities to ensure availability of infrastructure components, systems, and services
  • Document and communicate progress, recommendations, root-cause, resolutions through existing communication and work management tools such as Slack, Service Now, Zoom
  • Share on-call rotation responsibilities to ensure timely resolution of operational issues that arise during off-hours

Engineering (30%)

  • Communicate, plan, and execute continuous improvement of components, systems, and services
  • Support project technical leads to complete technical deliverables on-time
  • Apply technical expertise to recommend, design, implement, and document architecture, solutions, configurations, and operating procedures throughout cross-functional project life-cycle

Team Collaboration (10%)

  • Attend and contribute in meetings and working sessions to achieve efficient team operations and solution development
  • Stay abreast of new technology developments and continuously develop new technical skills to evolve with changing business needs
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, Computer/Electrical Engineering preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3+ years of Infrastructure engineering and operations experience in implementation, support, and troubleshooting of mission-critical business systems and services
  • Experience working within IT service management processes such as incident management, change management, capacity management, and configuration management
  • Experience working with Software Developers, DevOps, MiddleWare Operations, PMO, and other IT functional teams to install, manage, support, and maintain application services
  • Experience working with remote team members a plus
  • Experience working with automation tools a plus
  • Experience working with Azure cloud services a plus

Work Demands

  • Willing to work occasional weekends and evening hours
  • Willing to perform datacenter work including hardware moves, installations and configuration, racking/ unracking equipment, and other related work as required
  • Able and willing to drive to our datacenter in Carlstadt, NJ as required
  • Work is performed out of Teach for America’s New York, NY office

Skills

  • Technical expertise / Working knowledge of:
    • Linux OS, preferably RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
    • VMWare or equivalent hypervisor
    • Backup technologies in EMC Avamar/Networker/Data Domain, or equivalent
    • TCP/IP, DNS, LDAP, Domain and SSL Certificate management
    • Monitoring and alerting concepts and tools such as Nagios
    • Shell and Perl scripting
    • Dell servers and components
    • Datacenter operations
  • Operations-oriented mindset with keen understanding of the dedication and work required to support mission-critical systems and services
  • Excellent communication skills (Written, verbal)
  • Highly analytical with excellent problem solving skills
  • Highly organized and able to proactively prioritize and manage workloads

Education

  • RHEL certification a plus
