Junior Data Engineer

As a junior data engineer, you will focus primarily on the development of our SQL Server database, which supports mission-critical work including our external website and decision-support systems. Over time, you will also contribute to our SSIS Data Integrations work and migration to cloud technologies.

The Junior Data Engineer reports to the Managing Director, Database Development 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Design, develop, and test database objects, including SQL code, stored procedures, triggers, tables and views.
  • Work with QA team to build repeatable test suites for database and integration programs.  We embrace testing both to reduce defects and as documentation of business rules.
  • Perform data analysis for ad-hoc user requests and troubleshooting.
  • Learn new database technologies (on-premise and in cloud), as required by project assignments. 
  • Work with a heterogeneous project team including business analysts, project managers, application developers, quality assurance engineers, and infrastructure teams.
  • Learn business drivers / schedules of other partner teams in IT and across the organization. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience required
Skills/Experience: 
  • 1-2 years working with database technologies

Work Demands

  • Occasional weekend and evening work required
  • This position is located on site in our downtown New York national office

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of relational database theory and SQL, using Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or later. We will also consider experience with similar databases such as Oracle, DB2 and Sybase
  • Follow procedures and standards to make code that is flexible and easily maintained
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in teams
  • Desire to continuously learn and grow

Helpful experience, but not required

  • Knowledge of C# or Java
  • Microsoft SSIS, or any ETL / Integration tool
  • Experience with cloud technologies, especially Microsoft Azure
  • Reporting and/or visualization tools
  • PowerShell
  • Jenkins or other orchestration tool
