The Finance Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Global Controller. The Finance Division, led by the Director of Finance, is responsible for providing financial management, implementing financial strategy, and maintaining the fiscal integrity of HRW. The position is based in New York and reports to the Director of Finance, also based in New York.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversee the accounting operations of all entities (currently 27 entities and 13 currencies), including their control systems, transaction-processing operations, financial statements, consolidations, revenue recordings, proper classifications, cash flows, and reporting; 
  • Review, revise, create, and implement relevant policies and procedures;
  • Oversee 10 audits globally and an internal audit; 
  • In close collaboration with Director, represent Finance at internal meetings, meetings with vendors, and committee meetings; 
  • Provide oversight of accounting team on all related duties and deliver outstanding service following generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP); 
  • Lead, motivate, and mentor direct-reports, including communicating clear expectations, setting performance objectives, providing regular and timely constructive feedback, ensuring balanced workload, providing guidance on professional growth, and monitoring staff well-being as it pertains to stress and resilience issues and self-care; 
  • Travel internationally as needed to provide in-person support, attend meetings, etc.; and
  • Perform other responsibilities as required by the Director of Finance.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required; an advanced degree in Accounting is highly desirable. CPA is required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of ten to fifteen years of experience with increasing complex responsibility in the accounting field of a progressive multi-national organization or company.
  • Proven track record of all aspects of accounting, including general ledger, journal entries, account analysis, financial statements, audits, consolidations, and other accounting functions, is required.
  • Experience managing accounting in an organization with a complex structure in multiple locations and currencies is required.
  • High degree of proficiency in a computer-based accounting system and Excel is required; prior experience with not-for-profit financial software such as NetSuite is highly desirable. 
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment are required.
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization and with staff in remote locations are required.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills in English are required; proficiency in another language is desirable.
  • Prior experience working in an international nonprofit/NGO, particularly with grants, funds, endowments, and investments is desirable.
