Editorial Director

NRDC is looking for an experienced editor and manager with knowledge of environmental issues to lead the organization’s editorial team. The Editorial Director oversees the editorial strategy of NRDC.org, ensuring that it ladders up to NRDC’s larger content strategy and that the stories selected and produced are engaging and compelling while accurately portraying the institution’s mission and delivering on advocacy goals. This position reports to the Senior Director, Content.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversees and top edits editorial content for NRDC.org, ensuring consistency of quality and voice
  • Directs a team of writers and editors to craft compelling stories conveying the organization’s priorities, approach, and expertise
  • Builds relationships with scientists, lawyers, and policy advocates across the organization to stay abreast of ongoing work and to ensure that NRDC’s editorial reflects the organization’s policy priorities and advocacy goals
  • Works with the analytics team to ensure that digital content is smart, optimized, and shareable
  • Collaborates with social media director to create smart sharable editorial for NRDC’s social media platforms
  • Works with content management director on content governance and to optimize timing of content as it relates to larger initiatives or campaigns
  • Identifies narrative opportunities for video storytelling and works with multimedia director to execute
  • Directly manages three senior editors
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or Communications
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 10 years experience editing digital editorial and/or branded content
  • At least 5 years experience managing a team of content creators, including experience managing managers
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities at once
  • Deep knowledge of and passion for environmental and public health issues
  • Strong communication skills
  • A collaborative, creative spirit
