NRDC is seeking an E2 Northeast Advocate, based in New York, to lead and coordinate E2’s advocacy and chapter organizing work in the Northeast region, including the recruitment, engagement and deployment of business leaders and other messengers to advance E2’s and NRDC’s advocacy work at the state, regional and federal levels.
Job duties include identifying, organizing, engaging and amplifying business leaders to support our advocacy for climate, clean energy, clean water, smart transportation and other policies at the intersection of the environment and the economy. This includes building relationships with business leaders and lawmakers, recruiting new E2 members, organizing E2 chapter events, helping developing communication pieces and coordinating with E2 and NRDC staff other in-state partners. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with experience working with businesses or the private sector, or has experience building and managing volunteer-led organizations.
The E2 Northeast Advocate should be a dynamic professional who will:
- Lead E2’s efforts to build and amplify business support for climate, clean energy and clean transportation policies in New York, Pennsylvania and throughout New England.
- Be point person on developing and executing strategy to build E2’s New York and New England chapters.
- Manage E2 advocacy consultants in the region.
- Identify and recruit business leaders for advocacy purposes in key states in the region, with emphasis given to overseeing expansion in Pennsylvania.
- Engage business leaders on an ongoing basis, through personal outreach and by organizing region-specific programs and events, such as business roundtables, networking receptions, expert forums/workshops and meetings with officials.
- Identify opportunities to deploy business leaders for direct advocacy and media outreach in support of relevant federal and state-level clean energy/climate policies.
- Coordinate with allies, including other business /trade association groups.
- The E2 Northeast Advocate will report to E2's Director of Member and State Engagement.
- Expect frequent travel and occasional evening events.
- This is not an entry-level position. At least 5 years of relevant professional work experience is required. Please do not apply if you do not meet this requirement.
- Experience recruiting and engaging business people for advocacy purposes, with appreciation for community-building elements of the endeavor.
- Existing relationships with business, clean energy or related organizations in New York, New England and surrounding areas
- Demonstrated ability to build networks and work in partnership with the private sector, NGOs and volunteer organizations.
- Knowledge of clean energy and/or climate policy issues, and preferably, issue-based advocacy experience.
- Respect for the value of the business perspective, and ability to reconcile business and environmental perspectives in a productive fashion.
- Self-starter, comfortable coordinating with multiple players inside and outside E2/NRDC.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to build personal relationships easily.
- Strong communication skills.
- Highly organized, with strong attention to follow-up.
- Must reside in New York or be willing to relocate to New York.
