Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is seeking a Full-Time Director, Online Engagement to join our Digital team. This position is based at either or New York or Washington, DC offices.
The Director of Online Engagement is responsible for data-driven, strategic growth of AIUSA’s online audience for both advocacy and fundraising to advance AIUSA’s programmatic and organizational goals. The Director oversees AIUSA’s email fundraising, online advocacy, SMS program, digital acquisition and growth and works in close partnership with programs, government relations and campaigns teams. The Director of Online Engagement is a member of the Development Department and reports to the National Director of Direct Response and Development Operations and supervises several staff members and consultants.
- Develop, launch and manage multi-channel issue advocacy and fundraising campaigns on national and international issues. Key campaign tactics will include email, petitions, donations, digital ads, social media, SMS and other mobile tools, website content marketing, and more.
- Lead team responsible for the engagement of online action takers, donors, and prospects. Meet and exceed ambitious growth goals for fundraising and advocacy to increase AIUSA’s digital activism and funding base.
- Develops data-driven digital strategies including robust testing plans for engaging AIUSA’s online constituency in fundraising and advocacy campaigns; oversees implementation of those strategies and plans, tracks and reports progress, and identifies recommendations for future efforts.
- Supervises fundraising and advocacy managers to meet and exceed email fundraising budget of $6.5 million annual and increase annual online action takers from current levels of 200,000 individuals taking one action.
- Create ladders of engagement to cultivate donors and move supporters to taking multiple actions and converting to donors and off-line activists.
- Work with managers to run digital advertising campaigns to bring in new supporters. Seek new ways of bringing supporters and donors into the organization.
- Oversees strategic use and growth of SMS program.
- Collaborates with Development, Campaigns, Program, Government Relations and Membership departments to ensure that online engagement efforts align with and support organizational goals for advocacy work and retention and growth of supporters.
- Manages annual budget with supervisor’s oversight and in close collaboration with Finance staff.
- Develops regular systems for tracking and analyzing data, and regularly shares reports and insights based on data.
- Creates processes, procedures, forms and/or rules necessary for work completion, efficient workflow and/or service delivery.
- Participates in shared responsibility and collaboration with the volunteer and internal and external constituents.
- 10 years relevant experience.
- Demonstrable track record of success in digital fundraising and advocacy.
- Substantial experience developing and overseeing the execution of digital strategies for fundraising and advocacy, including multi-platform campaigns that engage large numbers of people through email, and digital technology.
- Substantial experience blending storytelling and advocacy across digital channels, to educate popular audiences about complex issues, deepen their connection to the organization, and engage them in advocacy.
- Experience developing and executing both short-term, rapid-response digital campaigns and longer-lead, sustained campaigns.
- Experience setting clear goals for online fundraising and engagement, measuring progress, and reporting results in concrete terms.
- Experience growing a marketing or fundraising program.
- Experience managing and supervising staff, as well as managing unit budget and vendors.
- Experience in contract negotiations, budgeting and revenue projections.
- Experience balancing competing priorities and needs, with a client-service/partnership orientation and a diplomatic approach.
- Nonprofit experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute online fundraising and engagement campaign and programs connected to broader organizational goals.
- Demonstrated ability to drive long-term strategies and plans forward while also managing rapid-response work and turning unexpected events into opportunities.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate online vehicles into broader campaigns successfully.
- Excellent management skills, including the proven ability to lead teams of staff to generate innovative, creative ideas to advance existing goals.
