Teach For America – New York is seeking a Director, Alumni Learning & Development to cultivate and develop a pipeline of talented alumni leaders through our regional programming, including our regional Institute. In this role, you will be responsible for working with our Programs Team, as well as our university partner, to build a cohesive strategy for recruiting, onboarding, and training all part-time and seasonal staff who work with our corps members. In addition to summer Institute, our regional programming includes Teaching For Educational Equity (TEE) seminars, affinity spaces, and opportunities to get involved in mentoring and events for corps members. Over the summer, you will manage the majority of the region’s School Directors, who are our most senior level part-time staff. In addition, you will consult on the overall Alumni strategy for the New York City regional team, with specific attention to the school-based alumni perspective.
Seasonal Staff Hiring Strategy (30%)
- Work with the Institute Management Team (IMT) and Programs Team to determine yearly goals, outcomes, and staffing structure for Institute and other regional programming priorities
- Partner with Program Design and Program Operations team members, as well as the Director of Talent Recruitment, to develop job descriptions, interview rubrics, interview materials, communications materials & process, and training plans for each hiring process
- Train part-time staff members to engage in the interview and onboarding process for seasonal, part-time and Institute roles
- Conduct interviews for senior-level institute staff, including School Directors
- Liaise with the national Human Assets team to support seasonal staff member onboarding
- Create the framework for seasonal staff compensation and manage compliance with organizational policies
Seasonal Staff Onboarding and Training (30%)
- Design and execute a comprehensive staff training plan for seasonal staff members which manages colleagues on the Teach for America Team and Relay Team towards strong training experiences
- Create an overall scope and sequence for staff training conferences, including: agendas, facilitation guides, a clearly defined roles for facilitators and participants
- Determine relevant trainings for part-time staff members and work with Programs Team teammates to coordinate their ongoing training and development
- Design and facilitate staff training for roles that you directly influence/manage, such as the School Director role, and when necessary, other roles
Manage Senior Seasonal Staff and Lead Talent Management Efforts (30%)
- Manage a team of School Directors at institute
- Maintain abroad and data-informed perspective on seasonal staff culture and development
- Design a performance management system aligned to organizational core values and role visions of excellence
- Collaborate with Program Leadership Team to, manage risk and HA issues as they arise (participating in Retention Working Group, Fair Warning Policy execution, etc.)
Team Responsibilities (10%)
- Sit on the Institute Management Team with other members of the Program Design team, Program Operations team, and Relay partners
- Participate in our regional Alumni Strategy working group, bringing the lens of school-based alumni
- Operate with a deep commitment to our core values, including fostering a diverse movement by partnering with people in the communities that may offer differing perspectives such as parents, teachers, and school leaders
- Support broader regional and organizational priorities, including selecting new corps members, supporting staff recruitment, attending regional team meetings, and supporting other functional regional initiatives
- At least six years of work experience preferred with at least two years of design experience and two years directly managing adults
- Teach For America institute staff experience strongly preferred
- Experience and enthusiasm for engaging in conversations around race, class and privilege across lines of difference.
- Prior experience coaching, motivating and leading adults
Work demands
- Ability to work some weekends and evenings; increased work responsibilities in late Spring and early Summer months; occasional travel
