Development & Outreach Intern

This job is no longer available

New York, NY, USA
Internship

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a student intern for the New York office. Ideally, the intern will be available beginning in February 2019 until May 2019 (dates and times are flexible).

Internships are unpaid. However, students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • The intern will learn how to conduct detailed background research on public advocacy projects and will build skills in coordinating researcher trips and planning donor events.
  • The intern will receive writing and editing training to effectively communicate HRW’s impact.
  • The intern will build skills in planning conferences, including contributing to the selection process for external speakers, program development, and materials development.
  • The intern will gain familiarity with the inner workings of a professional development department and learn how to use the Raiser’s Edge database—key skills for any aspiring non-profit and/or fundraising professional.
Educational Background:
The intern must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship term.
Skills/Experience:
  • Applicants should be well-organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and reliable.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.
  • Event planning experience and familiarity with digital advocacy and/or social media campaigning is preferred.
  • Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are essential.
  • Database experience and familiarity with Raiser's Edge or other databases is desirable.
