The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a student intern for the New York office for the fall 2018 semester. Ideally, the intern will be available beginning in August 2018.
Internships are unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the Human Rights Watch staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
- The intern will learn how to conduct detailed background research on public advocacy projects and will build skills coordinating researcher trips and planning donor events.
- The intern will receive writing and editing training to effectively communicate the news and impact of the organization.
- The intern will also learn how to use the Raiser's Edge database.
- Applicants should be well-organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and reliable.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.
- Event planning experience and familiarity with digital advocacy and/or social media campaigning is preferred.
- Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are essential.
- Database experience and familiarity with Raiser's Edge or other databases is desirable.
