The Natural Resources Defense Council is seeking a designer for its multimedia team in New York City. We’re looking to hire an adept graphic designer who has a diverse portfolio of creative work including a broad understanding of information graphics, editorial design, and shareable assets for social media.
The design team creates a wide range of materials—from T-shirts and buttons to physical experiences at venues and festivals to our printed Annual Report.
The ideal candidate has editorial print experience, a high level of design sophistication, a keen eye for photography, and strong typographic skills that apply to a variety of mediums including print, digital, animated text, and video. Exacting attention to detail and effective communication skills are necessary. The designer must have experience shepherding large and small projects from conception to completion.
The successful candidate will have a passion for the environment and public health and an understanding of NRDC’s core mission to safeguard the Earth, its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends.
This communications department position reports directly to the Art Director.
- Guide visual content from ideation to publication, making sure that work is delivered on time and within budget.
- Create visual content in accordance with NRDC brand guidelines and overall visual direction set by the Multimedia Director.
- Conceptualize and design printed communications, including brochures, posters, manuals, annual reports, etc.
- Design and conceptualize graphics for social media platforms, email newsletters, and other digital communications.
- Present data in compelling visual formats including infographics and data visualizations in collaboration with our digital and editorial teams.
- Conceptualize and problem solve with the Art Director.
- Work closely with contributing illustrators.
- Work with the Art Director to guide and instruct junior designers and freelancers.
- A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience as a designer at an editorial publication, agency, or corporate communications department
- Leadership experience
- Proven track record of working cross departmentally within a large organization.
- A deep proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience with color correction
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple daily and long-term projects simultaneously using project management tools and software
- Organized self-starter but able to work in a collaborative team environment
- Responsive and quick thinking
- Has a firm understanding of how design works with photography, typography, layout within print, digital, and social platforms
- Understands and uses social media platforms, especially Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Medium
- Experience creating animated GIFs and motion graphics
- User experience design skills are a plus
- Experience using Sketch and basic CSS are a plus
