Defense Campaign Social Media Editor

This job is no longer available

We’re looking for a seasoned campaigner and social media expert to fill a new, critical role on our growing social media team. The Defense Campaign Social Media Editor will focus on using social media to fight the White House and Congress’s attempts to roll back environmental safeguards, gut our federal agencies, destroy our public lands, and threaten our safety and health. This is a term-limited position ending in December 2020.

This position will help to lead the environmental resistance movement by developing social media campaign plans to defend against President Trump’s anti-environment assaults. As part of our NYC-based social media team, this position will report to the Social Media Director but work closely with NRDC’s Campaigns and Digital Advocacy teams.

You’ll create and deploy content (paid and organic) that advocates for climate action, embraces NRDC-crafted solutions, and inspires our community of supporters to take action. We need someone who can identify opportunities and innovative ways to communicate awareness and solutions to the world’s toughest environmental problems.

Deep knowledge of national politics and the environment is a plus; expertise in social platforms is a must.

Channel management will not be your primary focus, but you should be comfortable posting and scheduling content on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Medium. You should have extensive experience promoting content and running paid ad campaigns on the major social platforms and understand the ins and outs of these social ad tools.

As part of NRDC’s Communications Department, you’ll collaborate with our campaigns, marketing, and media relations teams to create content designed to motivate activists, achieve policy goals, grow membership, and increase our reach and influence.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • Develop social media campaign plans based on solid strategy to achieve political, policy, and public awareness goals.
  • Create organic content on NRDC’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, GIPHY, TikTok and other social accounts.
  • Develop and execute paid social media advertising campaigns to support campaign goals.
  • Track progress of content performance and make adjustments to remain on track for campaign success.
  • Provide hands-on management of NRDC’s social media channels, including creating and monitoring social posts, writing copy, etc.
  • Monitor breaking news and social conversation, crafting creative and responsive social media messages, rapid-response videos, and memes that illuminate key NRDC positions in real time.
  • Monitor national and international environmental and climate news to inform social content and campaign strategy.
  • Develop and execute strategies for promotion and awareness of federal actions, court decisions, and other announcements.
  • Provide strategic social media guidance and project management support for advocacy campaigns from start to finish, including project intake, campaign development, content scheduling, launch/execution, quality control and reporting.
  • Increase NRDC’s audience size and engagement metrics.
  • Produce live social media coverage of on-the-ground events, such as congressional hearings, presidential debates, marches, protests, hearings, speeches, rallies, etc.
  • Develop innovative multimedia and platform-specific tactics to achieve campaign goals.
  • Coordinate with colleagues from different teams and departments to provide social media guidance to support their work, including training staff and delivering strategy presentations.
  • Willingness to travel, work some nights, weekends and holidays as needed in response to breaking news or political events.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree or greater.
Skills/Experience:
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a social media or digital campaigner role, preferably at a news organization, political campaign, nimble nonprofit, or agency that requires rapid response capability.
  • The ability to work under intense pressure, in high-stakes situations.
  • Excellent writing skills with a knack for distilling complicated subject matter into short, compelling copy for a digital audience.
  • The ability to understand and adopt NRDC’s “voice”.
  • Strong strategic and tactical editorial skills, honed by previous experience.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple projects and shifting requests.
  • Familiarity with creating and launching geo-targeted and paid social media campaigns.
  • Experience working effectively on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, organize time, and identify resources for projects as needed.

About Us
Mission:

The Natural Resources Defense Council's purpose is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life depends.

We work to restore the integrity of the elements that sustain life -- air, land and water -- and to defend endangered natural places.

We seek to establish sustainability and good stewardship of the Earth as central ethical imperatives of human society. NRDC affirms the integral place of human beings in the environment.

We strive to protect nature in ways that advance the long-term welfare of present and future generations.

We work to foster the fundamental right of all people to have a voice in decisions that affect their environment. We seek to break down the pattern of disproportionate environmental burdens borne by people of color and others who face social or economic inequities. Ultimately, NRDC strives to help create a new way of life for humankind, one that can be sustained indefinitely without fouling or depleting the resources that support all life on Earth.
