As prominent state programs within the Atlantic Flyway, Audubon NY and Audubon CT have a combined annual budget of more than $7 million and a staff of 50 professionals. Our network includes 32 local Audubon Chapters, 10 environmental education centers and/or sanctuaries, and more than 50,000 members.

The Communications Manager holds primary responsibility for state-level communications around policy and conservation priorities to Audubon members, the public, and key decision makers for Audubon New York and Audubon Connecticut. In that role, and in coordination with counterparts in the Audubon network such as communications staff in Audubon Great Lakes, Audubon Pennsylvania and at Audubon headquarters, the Manager develops state-based communications strategies for Audubon’s priority issues, frames messages, develops content, develops earned and digital media strategies, and maximizes use of marketing tools including print and digital media. S/he will work closely with the news media and relevant news outlets to deliver Audubon’s conservation message and to engage constituencies and donors.   The Communications Manager is also responsible for developing print and online content and managing consultants, vendors, and staff to implement an aggressive communications program in the region. The Manager coaches program leaders to develop and deliver quality materials and generate social and digital media in support of strategies to publicize programs and conservation goals. S/he will work closely with the Vice President and Executive Director for Audubon New York and Audubon Connecticut and jointly report to the Managing Directors of Audubon NY and Audubon CT.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • In coordination with the leadership teams of both states, develop and implement communications strategies that will broaden Audubon’s visibility and reach, enhance development goals, and deepen the impact of our work.
  • Develop communications plans, messaging guidance, and media training for Audubon’s priority issue campaigns in the states, including but not limited to Audubon NY and CT conservation agendas, supporting communications for the states’ 10 nature centers and sanctuaries and National Audubon Society’s federal priorities in the states.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director of Audubon NY and Audubon CT to draft written communications materials and speaking notes, create thought leadership opportunities, and provide quotes for press releases and other pieces as needed.
  • Engage Audubon members across NY and CT on local, state, and national conservation issues, focusing on issues related to coastal policies, forest stewardship, native plants, climate change and renewable energy, environmental program funding, etc.
  • Secure local, regional, and national earned media for Audubon’s NY and CT initiatives and other regional conservation priorities. Coordinate with Media Relations team at headquarters.
  • Manage digital communications for Audubon NY and CT including social media accounts and websites.
  • Supervise a Communications Associate who supports communications in both CT and NY.
  • Develop budgets and manage vendors and contracts for communications services.
  • Conduct strategic communications and outreach to influence policy makers.
  • Evaluate results of communications program.
  • Engage a variety of stakeholders, including recruiting and training volunteer leaders and staff on communications skills and strategies, as well as coaching Audubon State Directors, chapter leaders, and volunteers to become effective spokespeople for the organization.
  • Ensure powerful messaging and consistency across communications vehicles, including the website, email and print newsletters, campaign collateral, reports, and social media.
  • Write and edit content for Audubon NY and Audubon CT as needed.
  • Ensure Audubon’s strategic imperative of equity, diversity and inclusion is included in messaging.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant area
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5-7 years' professional experience with campaign organizing, public relations, fundraising, project management and/or advocacy required. Superior communication and interpersonal skills a must; ability to work with multiple stakeholder groups across a decentralized organization also necessary.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing and mentoring volunteer groups.
  • Excellent writing skills with a knack for online communications and messaging required.
  • A collegial and collaborative work style, innovative thinking, strong work ethic, enthusiastic attitude, and a sense of humor are essential.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and desire to learn how to use tools to manage online communications tools.
  • Experience using media databases such as Cision, Vocus or Meltwater strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • A flexible approach to work, with a willingness to travel, as needed, and participate in programs occurring after typical business hours.
  • Strong personal presence and demonstrated interest in wildlife conservation and the mission of the National Audubon Society.
  • Spanish-language proficiency and experience working with diverse media outlets are highly desired.
