The Communications Associate is responsible for engaging strategic audiences and managing the communication and engagement with the mission of Vote Mama, ensuring that content reflects core values around racial equity and diversity. The Communications Associate will support the Communications Director to drive and execute VoteMama’s communications strategy and elevate the profile of the organization. The Associate will work on a variety of communications mediums, including press/media relations, blogs, op-eds, and more.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Communications Drafting and Delivery

  • Manage the creation, review, scheduling, and assessment of communications products, varying scope and tone from press releases to blog posts to op-eds

  • Collaborate closely with others to translate policy ideas and research findings into communication campaigns and talking points

  • News monitoring and daily press clips 

Media/Press Relations 

  • Build and foster relationships with press and media contacts, and identify reporters, podcasts, and outlets for pitching

  • Mobilize quickly to draft polished press releases in VoteMama’s voice and according to the organization’s brand

  • Supporting the management of the press list, ensuring it is comprehensive, up to date, and accurate 

Communications Strategy 

  • Demonstrate a strong command of Vote Mama’s brand, vision, and organizational strategy

  • Collaborate with team members and partners to execute and grow Vote Mama’s communications networks

  • Support excellent cross team collaboration and strategy development 

A typical day

On a typical day, you might manage the press coordination schedule, develop communications for press engagements, draft blogs or statements , and engage internal and external stakeholders for information related to your communications materials and strategy development. 

Skills/Experience: 

The ideal candidate for this position is a growing communications professional who loves executing communications strategies across a variety of platforms. You are comfortable engaging with and producing press materials, and consider yourself an expert at honing and conveying a strong and cohesive organizational voice that amplifies the strategy and mission of the organization you are supporting. The Communications Associate will report to Elise Anderson, Communications Director.

Required Skills for this Role

  • 2+ years in Communications or in a related field

  • Experience working with press, both communications and material production 

  • Experience working across a variety of communications platforms, ensuring a consistent voice and message

  • Demonstrated ability to convey information in a particular tone/voice when communicating the organization’s mission

  • Strong ability to distill complex narratives and ideas into digestible content for a variety of audiences

  • Excellent writing skills through a wide variety of mediums

  • Commitment to Vote Mama’s goals and theory of change, and passion for grassroots organizing and commitment to progressive policy change as well as deep dedication to the mission

  • Must be creative, strategic, collaborative, and organized, with keen attention to detail

  • Able to work independently and to exercise sound judgment and discretion – with a knack for quickly moving on strategic direction 

We Hope You Bring One or More of These Bonus Skills

  • Experience working on communications in the political advocacy field

  • Experience with email writing and management

  • Desire to learn and grow in the communications field

  • Public speaking experience and comfort speaking to a variety of audiences, especially the media

  • Campaign experience, either with a candidate or through project-based work

  • Experience working in a scaling start up and/or a similar mission-driven organization

Compensation/Benefits: 

Working at Vote Mama

  • This position is a remote in the DC/NY area and requires travel for in-person events as needed. 

Benefits and Compensation

Salary: $65,000-$75,000

Benefits:

Timeline and process: We are accepting applications on a rolling basis and will 

continue to interview until filled. We are planning for 2-3 rounds of interviews, all between 30 and 60 minutes via Zoom, in addition to a hiring exercise. While we are looking for the right match, the ideal start date is October 23rd, 2023.
