Context: Plans, convenes, and coordinates New York electric and transportation sector campaign activities as part of a just and equitable transition towards a decarbonized economy.  Pursues policies and programs that deliver timely significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions tied to Sierra Club’s overall goals to eliminate fossil fuels from the economy while contributing to a powerful climate justice movement. Solutions primarily focus on electrification of transportation, acceleration of renewable energy and efficiency development, and electrification of buildings and heating while avoiding new natural gas infrastructure in all sectors. The Sierra Club’s clean energy and transportation campaigns focus on equitably moving New York to 100% clean energy and electrifying the economy.

Scope: The Campaign Representative has program responsibility for the development of the strategies and priorities related to electrifying the economy and setting New York on a firm policy pathway to achieve 100% clean energy and transportation, in consultation with volunteers, partners, and other capacities.  The Campaign Representative is responsible for coordinating and guiding the local team of staff and volunteers, ensuring successful implementation of campaign goals and strategies, alignment with regional goals and robust collaboration across those capacities, campaigns, and the Atlantic Chapter. Produces educational materials and reports, does research, testifies, lobbies and serves as a technical resource. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, decision leaders, business and community leaders, the media and other key strategic partners and organizations.  Takes appropriate action to ensure that program goals and objectives are met.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Within a collaborative framework and in consultation with key stakeholders, leads and facilitates the development of a strategic campaign plan, goals and objectives, for the Sierra Club’s clean energy and transportation campaigns. Develops, executes and manages the day to day implementation of strategic campaign working in collaboration with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Chapter, Communications Department, Organizing and On-line Organizing capacities, Sierra Club’s programs, and volunteer leadership to ensure the execution of a campaign to establish measurable yearly emissions reductions progress by pursuing electrification and other policies.
  • In consultation with key stakeholders, leads and facilitates the development of a strategic campaign plan, goals and objectives, for the My Generation campaign’s efforts to eliminate air pollution in the region. Develops and implements strategic campaign working in collaboration with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Chapter, Communications Department, Organizing and On-line Organizing capacities, Sierra Club’s programs, and volunteer leadership to ensure the execution of a campaign to bring region into compliance with clean air act by pursuing electrification and other policies.
  • Engages with key strategic partners in frontline communities and within labor impacted by regional power generation and committed to a just and equitable transition to clean energy, elected and appointed decision makers, and executives in the clean clean energy and transportation industries to ensure advancement of Sierra Club’s priorities. 
  • Relying on professional expertise, provides support and guidance to staff and volunteers. Provides conservation training and motivation to staff and volunteers. Provides troubleshooting support to help support individuals and the success of the team.
  • Implements Sierra Club best practices regarding the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing, justice, equity, and inclusion.  Works to develop volunteers and to ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.
  • Works with Communications department staff on media outreach activities related to the campaign/program. Serves as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer media exposure.
  • Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.
  • Represents the Sierra Club to the general public and to strategic allies and coalitions.
  • Builds, maintains and leads or participates in coalitions and coalition efforts.
  • Introduces creative campaign ideas and approaches for consideration by primary capacities including the Organizing, Digital Strategies, Environmental Law Program, and Communications.
  • Provides fundraising support, including reviewing grant applications and meeting with and supporting the cultivation of donors.
  • Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
B.A./B.S. degree in a political, legal, or closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • ​1-3 years’ experience in the planning and implementation of campaigns, which preferably includes a strong combination of experiences among the following:
    • ​planning and managing a state or regional level legislative campaign; 
    • working with attorneys and utilizing legal advocacy;
    • lobbying;
    • media relations and strategic communications;
    • working with senior level political and business leaders;
    • building networks and coalitions to achieve campaign goals;
    • advancing petitions and proceedings at the New York Public Service Commission;
    • advancing regulatory action and policy with state administrative entities.
  • Strong grasp of New York’s electric and/or transportation sector policies and programs, electrification policies and relevant regulations.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in a matrix management model, working closely with team-members.
  • Ability to effectively convene multiple stakeholders across campaigns and impartially mediate competing priorities in service to collective vision and goals.
  • Sense of humor, patience, strong emotional intelligence and demonstrated ability to create rapport and inspire trust.
  • Self-starter with project management and demonstrated facilitation skills.
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
