The Americas Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative assistance to the team. The Division works to advance human rights in Latin America and conducts a wide range of work, including investigation, report writing, advocacy, and media work. The Associate position reports to the Managing Director of the Americas Division, based in New York, and will support other Americas Division staff working in other offices. This position is based in the New York office with a part-time, 50% schedule (20 hours per week). The schedule for this position is Monday to Friday, 4 hours a day within the office hours of 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- Providing day-to-day administrative support to Division staff, including scheduling, making travel arrangements, processing divisional finances, preparing for meetings, and creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems;
- Preparing, drafting, editing, formatting, and/or distributing materials such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op eds, publications, agendas, and web content;
- Drafting documents and correspondence and responding to requests for information in both English and Spanish;
- Maintaining communication among HRW’s offices, global staff, and external partners, and shepherding Americas Division publications through the internal review process;
- Assisting with research, electronic clipping, wires, and translations;
- Assisting with events such as news conferences, staff meetings, and special events;
- Recruiting, onboarding, and assisting with the supervision of interns, and assisting with recruiting and hiring staff, as needed; and
- Carrying out other duties as required.
- A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.
- Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish are required; proficiency in Portuguese is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
- Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
- Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally are required.
- Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.
- Strong interest in international human rights is preferred.
