The Indicator from Planet Money is a small, tight-knit, highly collaborative team making a daily, short-form podcast. We try to mix humor, storytelling and analysis to bring our listeners insight on the news, and a better understanding of the economy.

We’re looking for a production assistant/assistant producer who can do it all: book big-name guests, find the no-name “real person,” mix a podcast fast, pitch smart angles nobody else has thought of and hone in on the best fact hiding in an NBER working paper, or flashing by in a tweet from the St. Louis Fed.

This job is based in lovely Midtown Manhattan.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Find and produce original story ideas on a tight deadline.
  • Suggest and book guests for Hosts/Reporters to interview.
  • Prepare questions and approaches to interviews, maybe do them yourself.
  • Report stories for publication on podcast, web and broadcast.
  • Track down audio of all kinds for use in
  • Mix podcast episodes using Pro Tools and occasionally other audio editing software.
  • Write web and social media posts.
  • Reply to listener questions and social media comments.
  • Think strategically about audience development and execute the strategy down to the smallest detail.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, all on a tight deadline. Meeting deadlines is important.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 1 year of journalism or audio production experience for a production assistant or at least 2 years of journalism or audio production experience for an assistant producer
  • Audio editing experience in Pro Tools or equivalent program.
  • Ability to meet a tight deadline and balance multiple assignments at once.
  • Demonstrated experience in finding and interviewing sources and, ideally booking guests for a podcast, radio or TV show or equivalent experience.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate. NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.

Preferred Skills:

  • Video editing experience.
  • Academic background in economics, or work experience in finance, economic policy, or other field we cover at Planet Money.
  • Reporting experience.
