The Film Festival Unit of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Assistant with experience in event planning in the New York office. The HRW Film Festival currently screens in over 20 cities around the world throughout the year. The festival's programming committee operates out of the New York office to screen more than 500 films each year. Through a rigorous vetting process, the festival chooses approximately 40 films each year to participate in our various festivals. This is a full-time, fixed-term position starting April 1 and continuing until June 28. The Assistant reports to the Associate Director of Programming and Production, based in New York.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist with the execution of the festival production needs related to print traffic and promotional materials, in coordination with festival venues and staff, such as delivery of posters and postcards to festival venues before, during, and after the festival;
  • Coordinate print shipments with producers/filmmakers/sales agents/distributors and other film festivals to ensure the safe arrival and return of all films and related materials to the filmmakers; Liaise directly with the cinema managers/projectionists at each cinema and coordinate print traffic throughout the duration of the festival;
  • Coordinate the deliveries and pickups for all events and materials before, during, and after the festival, which may occur outside of regular office hours or on late nights during the festival;
  • Test all film masters and backups prior to the festival;
  • Coordinate team ticket purchases for the filmmakers and complimentary ticket requests;
  • Assist with proofing the printed festival program, e-flyers and film festival website;
  • Assist with the public opening night’s events as well as panel discussions and related events during the festival;
  • Assist with outreach and promotion to local organizations with interests related to the films being screened, which includes attendance at the IFC Center prior to the festival on Saturday and Sunday June 8-9, 2019 to promote the festival to audience members of relevant films;
  • Assist in conducting the audience survey at the cinema venues before and after film screenings;
  • Assist with hosting filmmakers and special guests of the festival, which includes arranging travel itineraries and other miscellaneous duties that may arise; and
  • Carry out other responsibilities as may be required.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in related studies is desired. Applicants currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in one of the above fields will be considered.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is desirable.
  • Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team are required.
  • Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
  • A background in event organizing and planning is required.
  • Strong interest in human rights and film is desirable.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: The salary for this position is US$ 15.50 per hour.
