Do you want to fight polluters, defend environmental protections, and advocate for climate progress?
We’re looking for a seasoned campaigner and social media expert to fill a new, critical role on our growing social media team. The Defense Campaign Social Media Editor will focus on using social media to fight the White House and Congress’s attempts to roll back environmental safeguards, gut our federal agencies, destroy our public lands, and threaten our safety and health.
This is a one-year position that will help to lead the environmental resistance movement by developing social media campaign plans to defend against President Trump’s anti-environment assaults. As part of our NYC-based social media team, this position will report to the Social Media Director but work closely with NRDC’s Campaigns and Digital Advocacy teams.
You’ll create and deploy content (paid and organic) that advocates for climate action, embraces NRDC-crafted solutions, and inspires our community of supporters to take action. We need someone who can identify opportunities and innovative ways to communicate awareness and solutions to the world’s toughest environmental problems.
Deep knowledge of national politics and the environment is a plus; expertise in social platforms is a must.
Channel management will not be your primary focus, but you should be comfortable posting and scheduling content on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Medium. You should have extensive experience promoting content and running paid ad campaigns on the major social platforms and understand the ins and outs of these social ad tools.
As part of NRDC’s Communications Department, you’ll collaborate with our campaigns, marketing, and media relations teams to create content designed to motivate activists, achieve policy goals, grow membership, and increase our reach and influence.
- Develop innovative social media campaign plans based on solid strategy to achieve goals
- Oversee the creation and execution of paid and organic content on NRDC’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat accounts

- Provide strategic social media guidance and project management support for advocacy campaigns from start to finish, including project intake, campaign development, content scheduling, launch/execution, quality control, and reporting
- Increase NRDC’s audience size and engagement metrics
- Produce live social media coverage of on-the-ground events, such as town halls, marches, protests, etc.
- Willingness to travel, cover some weekends and holidays as needed
- Bachelor's degree or greater
- 3-5 years of experience in a social media or campaigner role, preferably at a news organization, political campaign, nimble nonprofit, or agency that requires rapid response capability
- The ability to work under pressure, in high-stakes situations
- Excellent writing skills with a knack for distilling stories into short, compelling copy for a digital audience
- The ability to understand and adopt NRDC’s voice
- Strong strategic and tactical communications skills, honed by previous experience
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to coordinate and effectively work on multiple projects and handle shifting requests
- Familiarity with creating and launching geo-targeted and paid social media campaigns
