Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will work with the Executive Team, the Human Resources department, and a team of staff and volunteer leaders to increase the capacity of all to advance this organizational commitment. She or he will develop and facilitate training programs; review program plans and organizational policies with an eye to DEI concerns; and develop effectiveness assessments for programs and personnel evaluations across the organization. She or he will also advise Amnesty’s program staff on ensuring DEI considerations in all programmatic work.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Duties:

Develop and manage strategies to improve demonstrated value for diversity, equity, and inclusion among Board, staff and member volunteers. Integrate diversity & inclusion work throughout the organization, both in internal-facing and program departments

  • Develop, administer, and facilitate training programs for staff and member leaders.
  • Coordinate the strategic engagement of Amnesty USA’s membership in DEI initiatives. Project manage and coordinate the work of the staff and member Diversity & Inclusion team.
  • Guide and support the executive team and the Board on diversity & inclusion.
  • Advise the Human Resources department in the review and revision of policies and procedures, as well as on strategies for engaging and evaluating staff on DEI. Integrate diversity and inclusion content into orientation and training for managers and employees. Boost diverse recruitment in all areas of the organization and support efforts to increase retention.
  • Stay abreast of research and analytics to inform and support Amnesty’s diversity & inclusion strategy. In partnership with senior management, monitor and evaluate Amnesty’s programs for effectiveness in addressing and integrating DEI.
  • Coordinate and liaise on diversity and inclusion with other Amnesty Sections and Offices and allied organizations.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree
Skills/Experience: 

The successful candidate will have at least 10 years of relevant experience in design, management and implementation of equity and inclusion initiatives in the non-profit sector. Ideally she or he will also have substantial experience in designing and leading interactive and effective training and working in membership organizations. She or he will value diversity and will model and promote inclusion; she or he will have a strong commitment to protecting human rights around the world. Other skills needed:

  • Significant large-scale systems change design and implementation experience
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Advanced facilitation skills, including the ability to create safe space within diverse groups, support groups through conflict, and create processes and structures to help groups move forward
  • Ability to continually analyze and evaluate processes and programs and to create innovative and strategic improvements
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills and a great sense of humor
  • Demonstrated strength and skill in working collaboratively with all levels of an organization
  • Exemplary leadership skills and the ability to influence decision-making
  • Proven ability to build relationships and deepen connections with diverse people, groups, and communities across all races, genders, sexual orientations, and generations
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing or overlapping priorities
