We are seeking a New York Chief People Officer who will lead the Division’s agenda by developing and implementing best-in-class people strategies and initiatives to achieve our mission.  Reporting to the NY Executive Director, and working closely with the Division’s executive team and the senior leadership, the NYCPO will bring a global perspective to ensure the organizational structure and talent of NY is optimized, and our recruiting, onboarding, retention and talent development are aligned to continually evolve a diverse and inclusive workforce.  No other division or state in the Conservancy has a People Officer, and this leadership position represents New York’s continued commitment to its people and leading the Conservancy overall.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The NYCPO provides leadership and management of the Division’s recruiting, onboarding, and retention. S/he will oversee all talent management and development initiatives for the nearly 150 NY team members. S/he will lead and champion the division’s efforts to become more inclusive, diverse and equitable. S/he will also establish effective platforms and communication channels to build on the significant capacity represented by our trustees, volunteers and alumni in a manner that drives bigger and better conservation and organizational results. The position reports directly to the NY Executive Director and will be a member of the Division’s 6-person executive team.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Working across the NY Division (nearly 150 employees, nearly 100 trustees, nearly 100,000 members and countless volunteers, fellows and interns) the New York Chief People Officer envisions and implements a continuously innovative approach to talent management; positions NY as an innovative leader in its talent practices, including the acquisition, development, inclusion and retention of the globally diverse talent NY needs in the team, trustee, supporter and volunteer arenas.
  • Creates and implements a system for knowledge management across the Division that enables continuous learning, clarifies how to access relevant organizational knowledge across geographies and functions, supports cross training and knowledge transfer when long term staff retire or otherwise shift roles, and supports knowledge sharing as appropriate with partners.
  • Partners with colleagues across the Division to create commitment to vision and strategy.
  • Partners with the Global Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team to execute a vision and a plan to diversify NY’s workforce and supports the re-branding of the Conservancy locally as a compelling place to work for employees of all social identities, and as a compelling organization for trustees, members and volunteers of different cultural backgrounds, socio-economic status, and other differences
  • Partners with the People Team and works directly with the Division HR Business Partner to ensure alignment with organizational human resource systems, initiatives, and programs. 
  • Works directly with the Division HRBP, as needed, regarding compliance, legal and all employee relations matters.
  • Oversees the performance management process for the team and works closely with Managers to align overall goals and objectives and workforce planning needs.
  • Develops, implements and maintains the adoption of strategic workforce planning and management information systems to ensure the Division’s leadership is aware of the health of the workforce and works with the executive team to address any gaps or changes.
  • Acts as the champion for our People Agenda including oversight of the action items associated with people survey results to ensure continued staff engagement for the Division.
  • Builds relationships with business and non-profits to stay current with best and next practices and identify opportunities for partnerships.
  • Manages a budget, and works with the NY Executive Director to raise funds for the program.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • A minimum of 8 years related experience as a senior leader in Human Resources with direct experience in organizational learning, staff and leadership development or similar field.
  • Experience leading projects and developing strategy in recruiting, talent management and retention
  • Proven track record designing and delivering staff and leader development programs.
  • Proven track record designing and delivering organizational learning strategies.
  • Extensive experience as an effective manager of multidisciplinary staff.
  • Proven track record of designing and delivering organizational change related to people development.
  • Experience working in a multicultural, geographically decentralized, global organization. 
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal with all levels of individuals.  Excellent presentation skills.
  • Experience leading projects and coordinating the work of others.
  • Experience working with senior leaders and executives.
  • A proven strategic thinker with sound technical skills, analytical ability, and good judgment. 
  • Willingness to travel up to 35% time, at least in the first year of work.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters degree, or equivalent certifications, ie, SPHR.
  • Multi-lingual; multi-cultural; cross-cultural competencies.
  • Experience establishing and growing best-in-class talent acquisition and development strategies and strategic workforce planning.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, high emotional intelligence, and strong client service orientation. 
  • Excellent negotiation and diplomacy skills.
  • A working knowledge of complex social challenges and/or conservation issues and systems thinking/innovation methods.                 
  • Proven ability to work in a fast paced, stressful and highly visible environment.
