Associate State Director, Volunteer Engagement and Resources

Works with staff, volunteers, members, chapters, and other AARP departments to achieve AARP’s social impact and strategic member value goals in the state.  Develops and expands a presence in targeted Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities through strengthening visibility, awareness of, and engagement with AARP New York.  Works toward enhancing volunteer capacity, building and expanding community partnerships, delivering AARP programs, and activities, advocacy and engagement of AARP members, and potential members and their families.  Engages volunteers in AAPI multicultural community outreach and engagement activities, key relationship building, grassroots activities, programmatic and educational forums and member experiences.  Works to engage members and volunteers from the targeted communities in the activities of the organization.  Fully engages volunteers in AARP New York’s state strategic plan activities, with a focus on AAPI multicultural communities.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serves as a member of the state team and is responsible for the development and implementation of systems for effectively involving volunteers in all aspects of AARP’s work with community, chapters, units, external organizations, academic and business communities, and policy makers at the local, state and federal levels of government.  Develops and implements volunteer roles related to activities that advance AARP’s strategic and legislative priorities.  Provides volunteer resource management expertise to the state team.
  • Works in close partnership with staff and volunteer leaders to recruit, match, orient, train, and support volunteers.  From creation to implementation, is responsible for all components of AARP NY’s Volunteer Plan in conjunction to the AARP Volunteer Cycle of Engagement. Provides assistance and support on performance management and coaching in partnership with the volunteers’ supervisors.  Provides technical assistance in the areas of meeting planning, communications, skill development, etc.  Participates in training volunteers on priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies, relationship building, and state-specific political and communications processes.
  • Engages members, volunteers, and chapters in grassroots, community outreach, and policy maker relationship activities in support of the AARP state plan.  Organizes and maintains visible and effective coalitions and partnerships dealing with volunteer engagement, social impact, legislative, and member value strategic activities.
  • Builds and maintains strong, productive relationships with Members of Congress, state legislators, and their district office staffs in the assigned geographic region.  Builds effective grassroots and key contacts capacity within the assigned region to enable effective communication and impact on elected national and state officials representing the region.
  • Works in collaboration with state colleagues and national office staff to promote AARP’s strategic issues, priorities, programs, and activities.  As appropriate, facilitates interaction and communication with national office partners to request technical assistance and ensure that the proper resources are available for staff and volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates, and briefing materials.
  • Makes presentations at workshops and conferences, as appropriate.  Works with statewide volunteers on primary issues, community service, and legislative efforts.  Ensures AARP is seen as a visible force in community service and public policy development by educating staff, volunteers, members, government and elected officials, and the public.
  • Expands awareness of AARP and our priorities among community and public policy leaders.  Identifies and positions AARP as a critical voice for age-eligible individuals, but also demonstrates relevance to all generations (i.e., decisions being made today can often most affect those 49 or younger). 
  • Enhances AARP’s reputation among non-traditional partners, including community leaders, businesses, educators, and policy makers.  Initiates new relationships and sustains existing ones.
  • Monitors, compiles, and tracks the positions of allies and opponents through research and outreach.  Assists with monitoring the public dialogue about issues important to AARP through “issues” grids and other devices. 
  • Demonstrates AARP values in all interactions.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Human Resources, and/or Non-Profit Management, Social or Human Sciences, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position. 
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the state’s political and human services environment.
  • Bilingual skills may be required for specific assignments based on the needs of the membership segment supported.
  • In-state travel of 50% to 75% of work time required.
