Reporting to the Executive Director of Audubon Louisiana, the Deputy Director will serve as second in command and a key member of the Audubon Louisiana team.  S/He will be responsible for implementation of the office’s strategic plan with a key focus on its role in the Restore the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) Coalition. Based in the MRD offices in New Orleans, they will make regular visits to the Audubon offices in Baton Rouge and as needed to other parts of the state. Under the guidance of the Executive Director, they will be responsible for Audubon Louisiana’s work on the MRD Coalition, specifically around science, policy, outreach, and communications, in collaboration with partner organizations. Additionally, this role will create and execute the office’s strategic policy agenda designed to support Audubon’s national and local objectives to increase the conservation impact in Louisiana.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Audubon Louisiana Policy Leadership (50%)

  • Serve as the policy lead at all levels of government for Louisiana on issues affecting conservation, birds, and wildlife. Develop a policy agenda for Audubon Louisiana;
  • Serve as an active member of the state leadership team, actively participating in the planning and execution of a multi-year  strategic plan for Louisiana;
  • Assist with media, events, and outreach as needed;
  • Assist the Executive Director as needed including serving as the office lead in her absence.

Restore the Mississippi River Delta Coalition (50%)

  • Serve as a contributing member of MRD science, policy, outreach, and communications committees;
  • Lead and coordinate Audubon Louisiana staff working in service to the MRD Coalition;
  • Collaborate with MRD partner organizations to achieve shared goals;
  • Build awareness and support for MRD priority projects throughout the Audubon organization, including staff, board members and chapters through close coordination and active participation with Audubon Louisiana staff;
  • Leverage Audubon leadership for key meetings, events, and engagement and Audubon assets in support of MRD Coalition goals;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in public administration, environmental law, or related field required;
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working on behalf of Louisiana coastal issues and master plan. Knowledge of conservation issues, especially related to birds and their habitats, desirable;
  • 8+ years experience providing legislators and other government leadership information and education on coastal issues;
  • Demonstrated project or campaign management experience;
  • Ability to maintain strong and productive relationships with Audubon staff, partners, and other stakeholders individually and as part of a team;
  • Exceptional writing, reporting and editing skills. Must write well quickly and under pressure;
  • Ability to communicate complex and technical information clearly to various audiences, in writing, one‐on‐one, and formal presentations;
  • Exceptional time‐management skills and multi-tasking capabilities in order to juggle multiple projects and consistently meet deadlines;
  • Ability to operate Windows‐based computers (including Microsoft Office) and other required software;
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work some weekends and evenings, as needed;
  • Valid driver’s license required.
