The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for developing and/or supporting all volunteer programs and activities within a business unit.
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for oversight and implementation of a volunteer program for the Connecticut chapter that will fill capacity needs in field stewardship, membership services, communications, science, development, administration, and other program areas, allow diverse groups to help us achieve our mission while inspiring new audiences to be part of the conservation movement in CT, and engage external partnerships with businesses, agencies and other organizations that may benefit TNC’s volunteer efforts and foster a culture at TNC that values and supports volunteerism.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Coordinate multiple projects with staff and volunteers and that involve several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing a timeline;
- Supervise projects and events run by staff and volunteers, including field work and public outreach
- Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information;
- Purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget; may assist with budget preparation and monitoring;
- Manage all aspects of a volunteer program, including administrative requirements, development of protocols and best practices for staff, recruitment, orientation, data management, reporting, volunteer assessment and appreciation.
- Ensure compliance with TNC volunteer program procedures and policies
- Develop, track and report on relevant program metrics.
- Identify routine problems and utilize existing resources for resolution;
- Make day-to-day decisions within the scope of work assignments;
- May supervise administrative staff and/or volunteers, interns, or temporary staff;
- Work independently without requiring detailed management review of general work;
- Travel extensively for several days at a time and undertake evening and weekend work, as needed; and
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and physical exertion and/or strain.
- Experience in business writing, editing, and proofreading;
- Experience in organizing and managing a volunteer program;
- Experience managing diverse activities to meet deadlines; and
- Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated;
- 1-year experience in organizing and managing a volunteer program;
- Ability to analyze information for the purpose of preparing reports, coordinating efforts, and solving problems;
- Ability to write and edit written materials for use with member communications and special events;
- Demonstrated knowledge of the structure and needs required by a volunteer program;
- Database management skills with ability to produce reports;
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; and/or
- Supervisory experience.
