The LIS Clean Coastal Water Campaign Coordinator implements engagement and communication strategies that promote, broaden and align support for nitrogen pollution reduction to help achieve healthy ecological conditions in coastal waters of Long Island Sound. The incumbent will be a part of a multi-disciplinary team comprised of conservation, government relations, and communications specialists and will support the Nature Conservancy's conservation goals by carrying out advocacy, communication and media plans and serving as a liaison and informational contact between the organization, communities, local governments, outside agencies and other stakeholders.
The LIS Clean Coastal Water Campaign Coordinator builds and facilitates external networks, coordinates meetings, agendas, and presentations, and implements communication and/or media tactics to:
- Increase public awareness of water quality problems & solutions and the benefits of clean coastal water;
- Promote the development and implementation of community-based nitrogen reduction action plans; and
- Mobilize support for adoption of policies, innovative technologies, practices and public finance options that reduce nitrogen pollution from decentralized wastewater sources and fertilizers.
The incumbent is responsible for developing and maintaining communication and/or media materials including but not limited to www.liswaterquality.org digital content, social media and other targeted communications to audiences of elected and appointed officials, business, civic and opinion leaders and the media throughout the region. The incumbent supports research to identify new audience targets, tracks results of program initiatives and reports findings to project leads. The incumbent helps facilitate and coordinate on-going communication between external stakeholders and conducts other activities in support of the project. The incumbent helps to develop strategic partnerships with relevant agencies, conservation organizations, and industry to advance The Nature Conservancy’s conservation agenda. The incumbent may serve as liaison and informational point of contact among individual citizens, businesses, non-profit organizations, private groups, municipal/local, state, federal agencies and the Conservancy and may organize grass roots efforts to mobilize constituents on legislative/business priorities.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Coordinates project activities and manages timeline to meet campaign objectives.
- Interprets guidelines and information for nonscientific audiences.
- Assists with preparation of program materials including presentations, memos, and other communications.
- Contributes to research and policy analysis in support of legislative, corporate and/or policy priorities.
- Manages storage and distribution of media/communication materials.
- May supervise administrative staff and/or volunteers, interns, or temporary staff.
- Financial responsibility which may include developing and working within a budget, processing check requests, and completing travel expense reports.
- Makes independent decisions within the scope of work assignments.
- Works within geographic and strategic scope of the Conservancy’s Long Island Sound Program.
- Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
- Requires frequent regional travel, occasional evening and weekend hours.
- Fluency in English.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Experience writing and editing informational material.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in public policy, government relations, environmental science, social science or water resource management.
- Experience researching information from divergent sources and compiling it into a cohesive structure.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and other digital communication tools.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
