This AmeriCorps position serves with The Nature Conservancy over an 11-month period to advance our work in improving urban natural resources, providing education and training in stewardship and environmental practices, and growing our volunteer support through collaborative programming.  S/he will be responsible for a variety of activities in support of the Connecticut Urban Conservation program’s goals, with opportunity to support outreach and community engagement efforts to other Conservancy programs in Connecticut on a limited basis.

This position is contingent on funding. This position does have reoccurring access to vulnerable populations.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Volunteer Program Coordinator will be responsible for performing multiple administrative functions related to the assigned program.

  • Scheduling and coordinating logistics for special events and/or meetings;
  • Manage the coordination and logistics of planning, execution and impact of various environmental outreach programs;
  • May process forms, prepare reports, monitor budgets, manage webpages etc… regarding volunteer program;
  • May produce publications, materials to promote and increase public awareness (not fundraising);
  • Coordinate project with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing a timeline;
  • May assist in the development of program materials and correspondence;
  • Purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget; may assist with budget preparation and monitoring;
  • Make day-to-day decisions within the scope of service assignments;
  • Serves independently without requiring detailed management review of general service;
  • Recruit, manage, train and retain volunteers to serve alongside TNC staff and at TNC events;
  • Review and implement TNC policies and procedures regarding volunteer programs including training TNC staff;
  • Maintains neighborhood natural resources (trees, green infrastructure, etc.) related to the Urban Conservation program;
  • May maintain and operate tools and equipment with training in a safe and efficient manner while taking appropriate care of equipment (e.g. lawn mower, chain saw, tractor, two-way radio, fire management equipment, etc.)
  • Communicate conservation efforts being implemented such tree planting and green stormwater infrastructure to stakeholders, partners, and the general public
  • Travel to and from preserves, meetings and events which are essential to the service of this position
  • Perform administrative functions as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Perform duties under general supervision and established guidelines;
  • Identify routine problems and utilize existing resources for resolution, referring difficult questions and problems to supervisor;
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information;
  • Serve as a team member for assigned projects;
  • Service environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain
  • Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners
  • Recruit, train and manage community volunteers
  • Adapt or modify processes in response to changing circumstances
  • Interpret guidelines & analyze information
  • Demonstrate common sense, flexibility and teamwork with ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Coordinate with vendors/other parties to execute projects/deliverables
  • Willingness and ability to travel within the geography assigned
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED, some college and conservation experience desirable
Skills/Experience: 
  • U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Satisfy the National Service Criminal History check eligibility criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with MS Office
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
  • Commitment to complete 11 months as AmeriCorps member
  • Experience organizing time and managing diverse activities to meet deadlines;
  • Experience performing one or more administrative processes
  • Valid Driver’s License

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Interest in the mission and activities of The Nature Conservancy
  • Ability to write and edit written materials for use with program communications and special events;
  • Database skills, including managing and tracking data, and producing reports;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
