Under the guidance of the Senior Program Director, the Health and Wellness Director shall administer the policies, programs, and facilities related to health and wellness for members of the Woodruff Family YMCA that will promote membership retention and enrollment.  These programs shall include but not be limited to all group exercise programs held on or off site, personal training programs, youth and adult sports, and fitness orientations. 

This position supports the members of the Woodruff branch with the primary objective of putting Judeo-Christian Principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The incumbent will need to demonstrate and develop a commitment to the key areas of focus; youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Demonstrating and developing these key areas will result in the realization of positive employee relations and support.

  • Ensure that all programs under the supervision of the Health and Wellness Director operate in a safe manner and operate according to all applicable licensing standards, grant stipulations, YMCA policies, state and local laws, and YMCA of the USA risk management recommendations.
  • Ensures high quality member-focused programs through innovative program development, evaluations and ongoing staff training. 
  • Enable proactive, clear, effective and timely internal communications in order to ensure a positive and consistent member experience.
  • Executes strategies to ensure that members and program participants connect with one another and the YMCA.
  • Work closely with the Senior Program Director to develop and implement membership retention and sales strategies as they relate to the Health and Wellness Department.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, develop and evaluate all staff and volunteers in programs for which position is responsible and ensure that all departments under the supervision of the position are adequately staffed at all times.  Training shall include but not be limited to in-service workshops for group exercise instructors, fitness attendants and personal trainers.
  • Teach group exercise classes, conduct fitness center orientations and substitute for department staff as needed.  It is expected that a minimum of 25% of time is in direct service to members.
  • Connect quickly with staff and members.  Develop and maintain personal relationships that inspire trust and confidence.  Assist staff and members with meeting personal goals and those established by the YMCA for their development.
  • Work with outside organizations and members to recognize and address the needs of the communities through responsive programs.
  • Direct and coordinate YMCA Healthy Kids Day program.
  • Under direction of supervisor, develop and implement new youth/adult sports programs as well as curriculums and schedules.  Lead activities for as assigned.
  • Develop, adhere to, and monitor budgets for all programs for which the position is responsible.
  • Order all equipment and supplies necessary for the successful operation of programs for which the position is responsible.
  • In coordination with the Facility Manager, supervise and/or complete the maintenance of all program equipment and facilities.  Maintain all relevant maintenance and safety records and inspections.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies using multiple marketing venues for all programs for which the position is responsible.   Promotion should include but not be limited to development and distribution of school flyers, press releases, the submission of program information for publication in the branch wide program brochure, the development of fitness center brochures, participation in local events at which YMCA programs can be promoted such as health fairs.
  • Develop and maintain system to monitor certification status of all departmental staff whose positions require certification in CPR, First Aid and/or AED Administration.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and the benefits of participation in YMCA health and wellness programs to YMCA facility and program members.
  • Participate in Branch Management Team meetings and activities including but not limited to serving as Manager on Duty according to the Manager on Duty schedule.  Communicate regularly with Senior Program Director.
  • Participate in meetings sources.  Develop and implement plans to respond to the above in order to improve outcomes and evaluation results.
  • Maintains accurate and up to date records, files, and billing / collection procedures and provides data and reports as required for assigned programs.  Responsible for processing refunds, credits and participation reports such as silver sneakers and silver and fit.
  • Record and report all accidents and incidents in accordance with YMCA policies in a timely manner.
  • Positively represent the YMCA and maintain relationships with professional and community organizations and agencies in the Branch service area.  Positively represent the YMCA in accordance with the four YMCA character values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
  • Participate in activities, workshops, conferences, etc. that will enhance personal and professional growth.
  • Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned.  Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
  • Assist in the preparation for and implementation of branch special events.
  • Serve as liaison with all independent contractors providing services in health and wellness departments including trainers providing fitness trainings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Possess the ability to work well with others to ensure high quality results.
  • Account reconciliation or other accounting experience required. 
  • Must be detail-oriented, confidentiality-conscious, and organized.
  • Willingness to seek advanced training and added responsibilities.
  • Able to apply common sense and understanding to carry out position responsibilities.
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills are critical to the success of this position.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and handle multiple demands simultaneously with minimal direction.
  • Possess and demonstrate excellent customer service, decision-making, problem solving, team focus, critical thinking, and personal leadership skills.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and effectively communicate, document, train, and instruct employees on the benefits of the YMCA.
  • Solve problems by taking a leadership role in handling a variety of situations, problems, issues and/or complaints from employees.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit and/or YMCA operations
  • Possess a general knowledge and understanding of the YMCA, its goals, and its mission.
  • Able to work a flexible work schedule if needed with advanced notice.
  • This position requires proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Internet Explorer.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $38,000.00 - $44,000.00
